Bravo! It's great when you sort out a simple but effective solution! I've been saving paper towel and TP rolls to use as little collars. I saw the Home Grown Veg guy on YouTube use them as collars to keep the white part of a leek both supported and shaded from the sun so it stays tender and white. He also uses plastic bottles with top and bottom cut off to both keep them vertical and as a wind-break. I would worry the plastic would concentrate the effect of the Florida sun except in our coolest weather, but I'm saving some larger bottles to use as frost covers for overnights.
