Last year I used Wonder Soil in my grow bags. I'm not 100% certain how many blocks I bought, but I think it was eight. I have one leftover and I filled six 10 gallon and 12 five gallon bags. I'm actually re-using quite a bit of it this year.
As you noted, you will need to fertilize regularly if you go this route.
