Sounds like lots of great ideas. I have always used something like an old sickle section from a combine or swather and carefully brazed it over the hole on the outside of the can. If you go this route however, be sure you are outside in fresh air and try not to breathe the fumes coming off as you braze it, galvanized steel gives off some nasty fumes when heated.
