I wonder if part of the dislike about GWR is visual and psychological.
Personally, I have visual bias when it comes to food, no matter how good it might taste, it has to look good to be appealing to me.
In the words of an Italian Chef, "we eat we our eyes first."
So in this context, some GWR varieties can be visually attractive too.
