deer seldom bother my tomato plants. i have seen occasionally where they chewed off some leaves on 4-5-6' tall plants but i don't think they really care for the taste they are more curious than anything. but a hungry deer that does not have access to food will probably eat the entire 5' plant if hungry. when small you can protect them, i use this in september when they like to sample cabbage heads tho they never bother them any other time. put a fence around each plant by connecting a length of 2" X 4" welded wire fencing (or crw tho it's harder to work with) to make a circle then put a straight piece over the top. i suppose you can use 4' tall but if the plant grows into it getting tomatoes out will be hard. if you used 3 or 4 or 5' tall fence you could take it down each day as long as you don't have a lot of plants.
