It may not be too late for some varieties like Bermudas or Vidalia types. You will have to settle for much smaller onions though. I have started onion seed this late and made a fair amount of onions but they tended to be about half normal size. The ones that did the best planted late like that were started in the ground in raised beds and kept under hoops during below freezing nights so they didn't experience that slow down from getting too cold but I had to be careful to remove the cover before it got hot inside every day.
