If you google you can find a guy who uses 5"X 5" squares of brown paper - less thick than old grocery bags, and places them around a sawed off souvenir baseball bat and puts them in the holes, then fills with potting mix and uses the foam and the tray and the lid to good avail. The sponges are not all that expensive and work great for tomatoes (and Zinnias!).
