I've read that the red mulch is effective only in the first 20% of growth of tomatoes and melons. I purchased a roll of "red mulch" but decided not to use it since it didn't allow rainwater to penetrate it like most landscape fabrics do. Essentially, red mulch is non-porous sheet of plastic, not unlike the plastic used in garbage bags.
