I think you are going to have a more rigid cage system using the wire rope clips vs. zip ties. Also, the wire rope clips are reusable, where the zip ties are not.
For attaching the upper extension cages, I would never use a plastic material like zip ties. Here, the metal wire rope clips will make the base and extension cage sections seem like one.
