When I was a kid, this is how we watered my Grandma's garden and it worked very well. It is also how my cousing still waters his feed corn, pretty much, except for the automatic gates and timers he has.

I use a drip system now, but,t he trenches work very well. I would put the trenches in at the time of planting, essentially treating toms as row crops. I could see where waiting until roots re in could cause the water uptake to change slightly at first. I susoect the BER is just a temporary issue.
