Japanese Long Cucumber

I was wondering if the Japanese Long cucumber would make good pickles, has anyone tryed it?
I love that variety b'c they are prolific and very mild and crisp.:)

Hi,

The Japanese cucumber that we grow is over two feet long(Unami), it may be too big to fit into a pickle jar! LOL

Sliced up they make great Bread & Butter pickles or Dill Slices...

Take care,
Randy

Great, I will start to make pickles out of them!!!!! They are producing like mad now. I'm very glad to hear they pickle well.

Hi,

How wide are your Japanese Cukes?

How wide?... Guessing without measuring they are about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2". Does your Jap. Cuc. do well?

Hi,

Our Japanese Cucumber gets up to 3" wide and over two feet sometimes. The thinner, smaller cukes are used for pickles. Variety is called Unami Japanese.

Randy, where did you get Unami? I can't find it with Google.

Hi Earl,

Sorry I misspelled, due to typing so fast...
The variety is Umanami Oriental Cucumber.

Purchased it from a local organic seed company a few years back. A long crisp, crunchy non-bitter dark green Japanese cucumber from a Japanese old timer that has been growing it for years on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

All I can say is, hope you like lots of huge cucumber!
Best to eat at around 24" x 2", though still sweet and non bitter up to 30" x 3". Let one go last year for seed, it got 38" x 3 3/4". Then it stated to yellow... It doesn't need a trelis! Though a trelis helps keep cukes perfectly straight...

Earl
After reading this thread I just ordered this Umanami Oriental Cucumber as well as Nepal Tomato seeds from Full Circle seeds in BC Canada. Very reasonable prices.
