Is Variegation Possible
 

I noticed this on a tomato plant this morning which looks like to me to be variegated leaves, but not all leaves. I'm growing two plants of this variety and on further inspection, the second plant is showing the same thing.



Any ideas?

It is possible. There are a few known varieties, like Moonlight Mile with variegated leaves. What variety are you growing?

David's Ivory Pineapple.

There is a variety called Variegated that I i am growing for the first time this year Mcsee. Falens First Snow is another that is Variegated if memory serves me correctly.

I've taken a lateral that's variegated to use as a cutting, so should hopefully increase the variegation as a larger plant.

The descriptions of David's Ivory Pineapple make no mention of variegated foliage and I think they would if it's present. It's more likely you have a cross with a variegated one.
Generally variegation diminishes as temperatures increase.

Splash of Cream is another variegated variety...unless it is a renaming of the variety Variagated as some may think. The variegation shows up early and tends to fade away as the plant grows and ages. It was in my garden a few times just for the heck of it. The fruit was well below standard for flavor and size and production. Nice conversation plant for a while until it wasn't.

The previous grower of these seeds has reported that there was normal growth , no variegation on this variety for him. Possibly just a genetic occurrence and not the result of a cross in a previous generation.


Time will tell as to whether the variegation stays or goes as the plant reaches maturity.

It sure is possible - we have some released dwarfs with variegation (using Variegated for a breeding partner). There is also a nice variegated indeterminate named Blue's Bling, which is essentially Cherokee Purple with variegated foliage. I used it as a crossing partner with Polish and Little Lucky, and now have some F3 delicious potato leaf variegated selections that are yellow/red bicolor, and purple. It's a fun gene to play with.

There should be much more variegated varieties from Brad and Tom Wagner.
