Blackbear wants to mow the lawn and plant the peas today !

And today, the sun is shining in north Texas. The air is warming. Flowers begin to stir and appear above the ground. A new season begins as winter fades away. A new season begins from Nanaimo to Galveston Island.

I'm with you BB and envious of DD. A few days ago it was -21C and today it's 4C and pouring rain.

I get razzed by Canadian friends for still calling my page northern gardener since moving to the island.

The snow is up to the top of my boots, but it's not quite as bad yet as the blizzard of '96, when the unexpected weight of snow collapsed a flat-roofed school gymnasium, a supermarket, houseboats, boat houses, airport hangars etc

The previous big snow was the one my grandmother frequently told me about - in 1916. Snow up to the windows.

Well Doug, we have more snow than that but temps are about -28 C. So your heart may be warmed, but your nose and toes would probably be chilled :)

I just saw some footage on Global News.... ouch. Hope all of you are staying home... and warm!

Well, it was just too tempting and I went out to watch all the kids enjoy sledding down a local hill. Glad that they still find fun in doing that and don't spend all their time in front of screens the whole time they are having snow days off school.


I love watching the snow fall and the birds feeding. Two starlings have joined the crew. Two I can handle, 200 not so much! They all have a drink from the fountain that has a heater in it. Some of the birds seem to stand in the water enjoying the warmth on their feet as they stare off into space.


It is something I can take the time to enjoy in retirement. It's really coming down. We have something over a foot now. It makes it a lot more fun knowing that it will not last and that warmer weather is on the way.

The snow is collapsing trees onto power lines, so the kids might not be able to see anything on screens. I've got power now but flashlights, candles and matches are right beside me, ready for the third outage today.

I bring the hummingbird feeders in each night so they won't freeze, and the birds are watching for me when I put them out again in the morning. It is amazing that such tiny creatures can survive below freezing temperatures.

It Just is not worth it going out unless you have too !

roads are not cleared before more snow falls ….and

folks on the Island don't know how to drive in the strange white stuff,,,

many do not even have all season tires or winter tires...etc.

I guess we won't have to wait long ...but we will have to wait
I still have extra clean up left over from the December wind storm damage etc.

Time for some seedling starts in a few weeks etc,
