My new greenhouse

It has taken awhile but I finally got the greenhouse in a useable condition. I still need to run underground electric but I have the inside wired so I could use a heavy duty extension cord if I don’t get the electric run by spring. I also need to build a couple of benches but those will be easy compared to what has been done.
I have two small heaters for those cool spring nights and automatic vents and exhaust fans for the hot days.
I’ll let everyone know how well things go in the spring.

Very Nice! I am no builder and neither is my Husband so We bought a Rion greenhouse to replace my little old 2x4 and poly one. Truth be told, I might sort of miss my little one because it was reliably easy to heat even up to -15 at night in a cold spell here in early April. I will need buy a second heater for my new one even though it's not very big either. I look forward to experimenting and learning how my new one will respond in our weather up here. I am sure you will really enjoy your new growing space. If you don't already have one, may I recommend you purchase one of those home weather stations where the sensor is outside and the temperature, relative humididty etc is read indoors on a monitor. I have one and I place the sensor out of direct sun in my greenhouse and that allows me to easily monitor the temperature in my greenhouse without going outside. works like a charm and they are not very expensive. As well, it's a good idea to have a dry run with the heater and monitoring before you put plants in your greenhouse so you get an idea of how it all needs to be regulated. and where to place the heaters for best effect.
It's a really nice looking greenhouse, great job of building it yourself, ENJOY!

I remember you asking for advice on here some time ago.
Looks nice.

I see you made it look like the old Saltbox houses that were prominent in colonial New England years ago.

They would build the front part then as the family grew they added the shed roof in the back.

I like it. What's the transparent white stuff you used?

JerryL January 25, 2014 11:45 PM

It's the 5mm Solexx. I got it in a roll and cut it to length.

Suggestion! I would put two 50 gallon black drums of water on the north side with insulation behind them. This will absorb the daily heat in winter and also cool the greenhouse in the summer!

Looks great Jerry and I know you will enjoy it. I wish I could afford the solex :yes:for for my small greenhouse.

Greg.....who is jealous!!

Very nice set up. My small greenhouse is very similar to yours but my north wall is insulated in the winter but has a clear wall in the summer where I grow climbing beans or peas in the summer. Even thought you have a nice strong film covering the greenhouse a inside plastic attached to the 2 by 4 will add warmth to the greenhouse. A thin clear film 2 mills is all you need just for the winter . Just staple it on with a small piece of cardboard stapled to the plastic so it does not tear or double the edge of the plastic where you staple it for strength! I would say 20 % more heat will stay in the greenhouse. a 2 mill 9 by 12 clear drop cloth plastic will do the trick and only cost about $3.

What a beautiful greenhouse. I think this will serve you well. Can't wait to see what all you start in it.

Is there such a thing as "a bad bottle" of whiskey? (I know if you are a whiskey connoisseur there probably is...) I just heard that a new whiskey brewer started up in Wyoming..."Wyoming Whiskey". As I don't drink, I have no idea what is good, bad or indifferent as regards sippin' whiskey. This greenhouse is nice enough to spend some time in with a fine bottle if you are incilned that way! Very nice job!
