Cucumber seed shortage

I'm hearing that we are being shorted on orders from our growers of cucumber seed. This includes some of our best selling cukes.
So, this is just a heads up that if you really have to have a certain cucumber, order from whomever you get your seed from early.

I wouldn't be surprised if this has to do with last year's growing season. All year there was a shortage of pickles and cucs at the farmers markets. So why would the seed growers be any dif.

Thanks for the heads-up,
Carol

Anyway it is better to grow cukes from harvest of 2-3 years ago. So you better buy cuke seeds from seed companies with rather old stock from 2007/2008 ;-)

I wonder why there is a shortage? Failed seed production or high demand or both?

I had my worst year ever growing cucumbers last season, they all died in a two week span in two different gardens, which were separated by 20 miles.

I had a decent amount of cukes...but the couple that I let ripen for seed were mostly flat/poorly formed seeds that probably aren't viable. This was also evident in squash, pumpkins and melons too...(although I did have a couple of melons and a pumpkin that produced a decent amount of seed).

So, yeah, I'd say poor seed production is probably the number 1 reason.
