MMMM Nifty Fifty

Just ending this years, and I start to work on the next one.:?:

In a perfect tomato-world we'd have ~100 participants, each sending in ~100 packs of a single variety, and everyone getting back ~100 different varieties that they'd love. It would take one weekend to sort, pack and send back everything. But, that just ain't happening.

So, my proposal is ~50 participants, each sending in 50 packs of a single variety. Sorting and packing these would likely take one day. This would be ~25% of the swap. All other areas (wish lists, categories, etc... would remain the same (and I'd have more time for).

These 50 , or so, varieties would have to be OK'd by me (through PM's) to keep it a mystery. A rundown of categories of what I'd like to see would be...

Asian (1)
Bi/Tri Color (2)
Black (3)
Blue (1)
Cherry (3)
Cool Weather (1)
Desert Island (4)
Determinate (1)
Dwarf Project (3)
Early (~55 DTM<) (1)
Eastern European (3)
Experimental (Dwarf Hunting?) (1)
Green (1)
Gold (1)
Heart (3)
Hot Weather (1)
Italian (1)
Micro (1)
Multiflora (1)
Oldies But Goodies (3)
Orange (1)
Paste (1)
Pink (3)
Potato Leaf (2)
Productive (by weight) (1)
Red (2)
Resilient (1)
Saladette (1)
Spanish (1)
Striped (2)
Yellow (1)

Categories and amount are not set in stone.

Ask away.

I'm in. If there is enough interest and once parameters are set I should have enough to fill any number of categories.

I'm in for the Nifty Fifty as long as you finalize the details early enough for me to save enough seeds from one of my varieties to qualify!

I'd be happy to participate.

I just checked in with my army of tomato seedlings. They all lifted their leaf hands and said they are up this year for the Nifty Fifty!

Okay , so now I need to send 50 packs from these varieties:

Asian (1)
Bi/Tri Color (2)
Black (3)

Cherry (3)
Cool Weather (1)
Desert Island (4)
Determinate (1)
Dwarf Project (3)
Early (~55 DTM<) (1)
Eastern European (3)
Experimental (Dwarf Hunting?) (1)
Green (1)
Gold (1)
Heart (3)
Hot Weather (1)
Italian (1)
Micro (1)
Multiflora (1)
Oldies But Goodies (3)
Orange (1)
Paste (1)
Pink (3)
Potato Leaf (2)
Productive (by weight) (1)
Red (2)
Resilient (1)
Saladette (1)
Spanish (1)
Striped (2)
Yellow (1)

USPS 3' x 3' box. :P Just Kidding

I would be able to do that with Cherry tomatoes. I already save way too many seeds.

I can never resist.

If I have a successful season then I will participate. Last year was my first. Enjoyed contributing. Keep us updated on changes and developments.

I also hope to grow out several of the varieties you sent on your wish list...

Barb_FL February 27, 2017 10:08 PM

I would love to participate. When do we send you a PM?

In my case, it's too late to start seeds now, so I would need to go with what I am currently growing, what I already have saved, or what I can start growing in August if it would be ready for your seed swap. I ate my first big ripe tomato on December 1 and Fall '16/Winter '17 has been an awesome tomato season in Florida. Would getting the seeds to you in early-mid December be too late for your swap? If not, the possibilities are endless.

You can count on me too.

Even though, just last night as I was making my list for this year and sorting, I said "next year I am only sending seeds in, none in return" Maybe I can still do that. :)

I am in!

I've never paid much attention to MMMM posts so most of you probably already know, but how many seeds per pack, and when do you need them?

Usually minimum of five, but ten seems to be the average.

AlittleSalt February 28, 2017 10:35 PM

I agree. I send ten seeds per pack unless I have way too many...there might be 20 in some of them :)
