Mini multi-colored sweet peppers

At Sams Club, and the grocery store, they are often selling a medley of yellow, red, and orange mini sweet peppers (maybe 1 1/2 - 3 inches long).

Does anyone know what these are, and if the seed can be purchased?

Also, do they mature any faster than the full-size sweet/bell peppers?

I've mostly given up on sweet peppers, they just take so long to mature, but a friend and I would love to grow these little guys next year - especially if they matured faster than the others.

Tracy - The winter before last, I saved seed from the Pero brand of mixed colored mini-peppers that come in a plastic box container. (also saved seed from the larger Mucchi brand) Last summer the peppers all grew true to type, so they probably are not hybrids. I saved seed from the summer peppers, so we'll see if they grow true the 2nd year. The mini's were fine, and earlier than the big peppers, although with the cooler summer last year I can't say I had a huge crop.

The plant in the pot produced more than most of the ones in the ground.

I was poor at taking pepper pictures last year, so can't find any of the red or yellow minis, the orange must have been the first to ripen, or maybe I just liked the color best!
I think I have seen seed for similar ones from Tomato Growers Supply.

Oh great, I think I have some here that are getting old, I can save the seeds.

Off to read up on how to save pepper seeds - thanks!

Well, that was a good idea - except - they don't have any seeds!

A couple of the red peppers had a few seeds, the yellow and orange ones had none at all. Huh.

I thought all the sweet peppers were green until they matured, so I thought these little guys would be mature, since they're red, yellow, and orange.

So are they not mature? Or some kind of seedless variety?

I stuck a few in the dirt anyway, if they grow they grow.

Tam there is a heirloom sweet pepper that is roughly 2 in long X 1 - 1 1/2 in around I am growing this year called Sweet pickle pepper, They are supposed to have a really sweet and good flavor and are multi color ranging from green, yellow/orange, purple, and red.

There is a post about them somewhere in the pepper section on tville.

The seeds are available from many places Parks and many others have them.

The plants are supposed to grow 18in tall x 18 in around with peppers that look like the old style Christmas tree lights.

Oh editing to add this the seeds for the Sweet Pickle peppers are very small compared to most other sweet and even most hot peppers.
Roughly the size of tomato seeds.

I saw those, they looked really pretty. I'll be interested to hear how yours turn out.

I'm wondering if this sweet pepper medley is actually 3 different kinds of peppers. The reds tend to be longer and bigger. Whereas the orange is kind of in-between, and the yellows are more short and stubby.

I did look at TGS, and didn't see anything quite the same. I guess if I get another pack, I'll have to see if I can find a few seeds in there. Late as it is, I could try a couple in pots perhaps. We'll see.

I know the sweet bells at Wally world are a mix of different peppers cause the yellow one is always much larger than the green and the red ones, So you may be right that they Sam's does that with the mini sweet peppers as well.

Totally tomatoes sells red one called baby bell, and a mini bell blend. Burpee sells golden baby bell. I have grown them all. And really love them as an appetizer stuffed with a mixture of cream.cheese mixed with salsa (drained). This year I ordered mixed red and yellow mini bell from Remy.

I grew out some seeds from one of those mini medly peppers (from Aldi's grocery store) last year (orange like ddsack's picture). It was a hybrid and produced both pointy pepper and bull-nosed pepper plants of varying productivity and seediness. The original only had about 5 seeds per fruit. I saved seed from a productive plant with fruit most like the original and am growing it out again this year.

I saw the baby bells, they look good. These are entirely different though, the shape is longer and pointier.

I guess I'll save a few seeds next time, and see what happens.

Try Dulcetta from Redwood City Seeds.

Those look really nice. They're not exactly the same, as with these min-peppers, the red ones are the largest. But I don't mind, they look good. Thanks.

DiggingDogFarm April 28, 2011 11:14 AM

Not sure why they show a small red one.
The red are normally the size of the other colors.

I got Little Dickens and Sweet Pickle from Sandhill this year, both of which are small sweet peppers. I'm looking forward to trying them, but have not a had a chance to plant seeds yet (!!) so it looks like I'll have to wait until next year.
