Most bizarre fungus I’ve ever found

This turned up in our garden today. I noticed it because of the smell but had to take a picture before throwing it in the trash.
Meet Mr. Clathrus Ruber, the cage stinkhorn.

That's downright "alien" looking...:surprised:

SpookyShoe February 6, 2019 08:21 PM

In my area Dog Vomit Fungus is common.

Ok, I had to look that up right away.

Yes, it’s pretty bizarre.

It doesn’t even look possible. What variety there is in the world...

That picture is really scary if you watched "Stranger Things".

I like fungi and try not to disturb it.
I have some here that look like round coal.

Lol, staying away from that then.

Unfortunately, it was growing in a container that needs to be replanted plus the ‘aroma’ was overpowering. I try to leave other non-stinky fungi alone.

GoDawgs February 7, 2019 07:53 AM

Downright bizarre! I wonder what in that container had the spores. I guess if you leave the soil alone you'll find out if there are any more spores in there.

Very interesting-looking fungus!
Speaking of bizarre mushrooms, Last year, I went to the local forest and the ground was covered in round mushrooms, some of them were perfect white balls, some opened up and looked like "zombie eyes"... Took few picture of them:

Raised up around untold millions of them
Called the devils snuffbox or puff balls.

Can be eaten if right kind as in all fungi

These are not puffballs, these are Phallus impudicus (stinkhorns).
This "zombie eye" will grow into... well.. phallus. Very stinky one. :)

In researching the fungus in our garden I couldn’t help but be amazed at all the diversity.

Similar to when I started researching corals in preparation for possibly setting up a saltwater tank.

SpookyShoe February 8, 2019 04:37 PM

Phallic fungus
