Seeds are like small pieces of gravel as far as the human digestive track is concerned. The abrasive effect is ameliorated somewhat by cracking the seed and in other cases makes the effect more abrasive. In general seeds should not be ingested. Seeds are digestible if the animal has a crop. (birds).

With all due respect, we Humans eat many kinds of seeds (at least I do - hemp, chia, sunflower, flax, pumpkin, sesame just to name a few). I'm sure that there are some health conditions which preclude someone eating seeds, but for most of us, they are healthy!

Plus, in the Vitamix, the tomato seeds are pulverized. There's nothing left to to be abrasive...

I did a quick search and found this article about tomato seeds and gel:

I dispute this. Disguised like out of sight out of mind.

Interesting articles, Robin! I really don't see how tomato seeds could be harmful, especially when pulverized with the Vitamix.

My sauce turned out terrific and I will be processing my tomatoes this way for years to come! It made my life so much easier!

Oh, yes Durgan it's clear that we each absolutely dispute what the other is saying. Let's just agree that we disagree. OK?

I encourage anybody that is reading this and has concerns to do their own research and decide for themselves.

Does anyone find the sauce too watery when using the vitamix?

Lately I've been chopping up my tomatoes and then putting them over a colander and mixing them around to drain off lots of the "water". I then put them in the pot on the stove and start cooking. This way, I have much less water to cook off and the sauce gets thicker quicker. I'm thinking with the entire tomato going into the vitamix, you'd end up with a lot of water to start with.

If you think your tomatoes are too watery, either roast them before hand, to reduce the liquid, or sqeeze them to save the seeds and the gel mostly comes out as well, or put them through the vitamix and then place in several thicknesses of cheese cloth and drain a couple hours.

Rockporter July 10, 2017 05:40 AM

I use the vitamix but I cut each tomato in half and take out the seeds and gel first. I throw the rest into the vitamix and I have not had a problem with it too watery.

I confess, I do love my Vitamix, LOL
