Saffron Crocus

We've had three flowerings from our Saffron Crocus, so we decided it was time to lift the corms and separate them and fill the garden bed they are in and let them do their thing. Among the corms were some large ones that had already started to shoot with a good root system, but there were also a lot of smaller ones too. We've had this dedicated bed since they first arrived here. We planted every corm so the bed is now as full as it can be. We added cow manure and blood & bone to give them a start into Winter.

Last season we got 53 flowers from this bed.

That's marvelous! I'm into my 2nd year of growing Saffron Crocus but being in the northern hemisphere I have to wait until September/October to see mine bloom. I started with 10 and they have already divided some. They have enormous wispy foilage!

Our first Saffron Crocus corm to push through the mulch today. The lifting and replanting a couple of weeks ago hasn't done any harm to the corms.

I also grow saffron crocus and after the first 2 years it really started to spread. I divided some of the bed last year but this year (year 4) I will be giving some away because I have so many. I didn't count the flowers last year but I probably had 200.

We've so far got about 50 Saffron corms that have grown new tops, with two flowers to date.

More to come hopefully.

We're happy with what we ended up with after lifting.

Do you all grow anything with the saffron when it's off season or just leave the containers dry for a couple months before resuming watering?
