Finally decided what I'm planting :)

These are the varieties I'll be sowing. I usually sow a few extras to bring to the swap anyway, but if you just gotta make sure you get a particular variety, then speak up now and I'll sow some extra just for you!

Black Cherry
Snow White Cherry
Believe It or Not
Black Krim
Black Brandywine --potato leaf variety
Brandywine --Sudduth strain
Church
Green Giant
KBX
Marianna's Peace
Spudakee Purple
Stump of the World

I'll try my best to fill all requests. See you all on the 7th:dance:

JerryL March 28, 2011 12:32 PM

Hey Barbee

Glad to see you plan to make the Swap this year. I'm having trouble germinating my Black Cherry so if you can bring one for me that would be great.

I should be posting my list in the next few days.

garnetmoth April 4, 2011 09:40 AM

Ive also happily got Black Cherry up too! Ill be potting up next week or so.
Me, actually making a plant swap?!

I was really hoping to get Bloody Butcher seed in trade but never quite figured it out, that or Stupice for canning? if'n anyone has seeds.

the most unusual one I have is oranje van goeijenbier from WinterSown.org

beatpoet April 4, 2011 07:40 PM

Pretty new to this site, but hoping I can make it out for this. Should have a few extra plants as long as I don't lose any seedlings between now and then.

garnetmoth: I'm planting Stupice this year, so if I come I'll make sure to bring any extra I've got if I can make it.

lurley April 5, 2011 09:28 PM

Definitely bringing some berekley tie dye heart and isis candy, got great germ on those and had tons potted up today

JerryL April 10, 2011 11:49 AM

So, this has not been my best year so far. Too many things going on I guess.

Did I mention I retired? Getting SS and Medicare set up plus all the other things (what's first on the honey-do list, what time of day should I take my nap, etc...).

I planned to start Carbon, Cherokee Chocolate and Mark Twain this year but didn't. So if anyone has any extra of those I could use one of each.

Here is what I have potted up:

Aker's West Virginia
Aunt Gertie's Gold
Aunt Ruby's German Green
Big Rainbow
Box Car Willie
Brandywine, Quisenbury
Canestrino

Lillian's Yellow Heirloom
Lucky Cross
Marianna's Peace
Mortgage Lifter, Radiator Charlie
Red Brandywine

Barbee April 10, 2011 12:39 PM

garnetmoth April 10, 2011 08:15 PM

Hey Jerry, Ive got ya covered for a Carbon or 2!

Beat- were practically neighbors- hi! I do appreciate it. I did get BB seeds in the mail this week, so no big rush.

lurley April 11, 2011 10:22 PM

Jerry,
could I get a yellow red butt? Tee hee! Gotta love it just for the name:))

Barbee April 12, 2011 07:25 AM

So far, I have Jerry down for a Black Cherry. If you requested something and I missed it, please repost.

Here is the link to the list I have of plants for sale just so I don't have to retype everything here. My sale starts the day after the swap so if anyone sees anything they would like me to bring them let me know as I obviously can't bring some of everything but will try to bring a couple for anyone who requests specific ones, as long as everyone doesn't want the same thing since some varieties I have as few as three plants of and need to keep at least one for myself. And I haven't updated the list with newer plantings as I wasn't sure if they would be big enough to list for my sale (4 inch pots) but I'm sure they would be at least nice 6 pack size and I could bring those too so if I don't have it and you are looking for it let me know and I'll check. I'm not sure if it's on my list but I also have Blush if anyone is interested.

Barbee April 17, 2011 09:40 PM

If you have a spare Lescana, I'd love to swap something with you. I tried to get that one at last year's swap and now seeing it just reminded me I meant to buy seeds this year. Dangit!

Crispy Corners Guy April 18, 2011 01:37 AM

We've firmed up our travel plans for later in May so I can come to the May 7th event. I'm so excited!

Jerry -- If they are still available, I would like to reserve an Aker's West Virginia, an Aunt Gertie's Gold, a Lucky Cross, and a Mortgage Lifter.

Barbee -- If they are still available, I would love a Black Krim and a Green Giant plant.

Lurley -- Wow! What a huge variety you have! If you have one of each to spare, I'd like to try a Great White, a Black Pear, a Green Zebra, a Sungold, a Goose Creek, and a San Marzano Redorta.

My hens are laying like crazy with the warmer spring days, so I'll be sure to bring you all some fresh eggs -- and if all continues to go well, I should have a tomato plant for each of you from my very favorite variety from last year that I finally found a source for -- Ben's Ivory Pear.

Thanks!
Tim

lurley April 18, 2011 09:07 AM

Barbee- think I can help you out on that Lescana, they didn't germinate that well so they are on my list for dropping a few more seeds this week but I know I have at least three that came up the first time so you are covered.
Tim- checked and have all those you'd like so will be bringing them for you, no eggs please :D I've got 40 chickens of my own (plus ducks and geese)

Barbee April 18, 2011 11:36 AM

Tim, I've got you on my list for Black Krim and Green Giant. Bring on the eggs, woohoo!

Lurley, Thanks for trying with the Lescana. If you don't have enough, it's no big deal. I'll just buy seed for next year!

Hoping more folks check in soon!

lurley April 18, 2011 02:52 PM

Yes Barbee, got you covered for at least one lescana, no worries.

JerryL April 18, 2011 03:14 PM

Sorry I've been slow to respond.

I've got an Aunt Gertie's Gold saved for Barbee

A Yellow Red Butt for Lurley

And an Aker's W.V., Aunt Gertie's Gold, Lucky Cross and Mortgage Lifter for Tim.

Turns out my Black Cherry came to life so I no longer need one of those but I'll still take the Carbon or 2 offered.

Thanks

beatpoet April 18, 2011 05:48 PM

Well, as it turns out, I won't be able to make it afterall. I forgot about an out of town wedding I will be attending that day.

yrb April 22, 2011 12:05 PM

Jerry, that is the day we will be at the church plant sale. We get done at 1pm and may be able to get packed up and up to Paxton before everyone leaves at 3. We have our regualrs! Will post a link to our list asap.
We have several from Earl not on the list that we are growing for ourselves and to share with Choptag folks.
Hope to see you then,
Amy P

yrb April 22, 2011 12:10 PM

Earl or Jerry or anyone...
do you remember the medium-lg pleated pear shaped reddish pink tomato Mr. Darby brought several years ago to the tasting? It is one of my favs and I have it listed as Darby's Red Raspberry. Another plant I got 2 or three years ago was an Alfson? orange? from a lady who's name I can't remember. Help me remember!!!

Looking forward to this weekend....

Plants like most other things in my life right now are behind. I will be present for the SWAP but not sure how late I will be. Volunteering at my son's track meet and those can sometimes run long.

If anyone can bring a few extra Sungold I would be so appreciative as it will allow me to get out of the tomato doghouse as I forgot to order seeds for this year. Spoiled by OP varieties.....forgot to order the one hybrid I grow.

Also, if anyone has any plain old Jalapeno peppers that would be great. Mine came up and then failed. I'll take as many as you can throw my way since I grow them for smoking into chipotle powder.

I can trade some wonderful New Mexico (Sunrise) orange peppers that make the most wonderful roaster red pepper sauce.

I also have a number of tomatoes that will be extras but nothing as extravagant as I'm reading. At work so I don't have the list handy.

Looking forward to it!

Mark:D

lurley May 3, 2011 06:30 PM

I can cover you on the sungold and jalepeno. Chipotles....yum! Will four jalepenos be enough? edited to add: sungold was hit by frost the other night so can only bring you and another person one each..sorry

Well not too many people but a whole lot of quality.

Barbee (Susan) was the only one to carry out the plant swap philosophy – come with plenty, leave with few. We found out that last year she grew a 500 pound pumpkin and a 170 pound watermelon.

Tim and Amy (Pearl and Caleb in tow) brought few and left with many. He brought fresh eggs. Plus it was Tim’s birthday so Amy brought a box of tremendous cupcakes.

Lurley, our newest CHOPTAGer came from above Columbus. It took 34 seconds for her to jump right in. I hope she felt welcome. She is growing 40, that’s right, 40 bi-colors this year. She’s determined to find a good one. ;) She too took home more than she came with. She also has 40 chickens. Must be something about the number 40. She also shared many of her gardening tips.

Long term member, Mark, arrived later in the day after attending and working at his son’s soccer game. He shared his knowledge of various varieties making the groups discussions especially enjoyable.

Tony and Amy came from Kentucky after their plant sale with their usual array of beautiful plants. More variety information and growing techniques. Great information.

For me this gathering was a bit different than past events. With the small number of people we had a chance to have more in depth conversations. We got to hear/learn about a large array of farming and growing topics. All and all a good day.

By the way, Barbee raises pigs. :))

Thanks folks.

lurley May 7, 2011 08:01 PM

Made it home safe. Thanks everyone for being such a warm and welcoming group, it was wonderful to meet you all and get to pick your brains and bring home some new varieties of tomatoes. :D:D This is the link to the photo gallery where I told about how I make sauce in case anyone wants it.

If anyone wants the recipe for the cake send me a pm and I'll send that out.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again in August.:yes:Can't wait to get my yellow red butt in the ground! :)) I love saying that!

Barbee May 7, 2011 09:40 PM

Well as usual, I posted in the wrong thread LoL

Had a terrific time and I feel like I got to know everyone so much better than I did before! Except for Lurley, who I didn't know at all before today but what a fun person she is :)
It was so nice to commiserate with everyone on the crappy weather and I felt much better driving home knowing that I was not the only person not to have my plants in the ground.

VGary May 7, 2011 11:38 PM

Sorry I could not be with all of you

Greetings to all my CHOPTAG Friends!
I was uncertain if I could come that far from home early on. Both Katharine and I have health issues which some of you know about. We have good days and not so good days. I had a terrible season with gardening last summer and lost almost every thing and it was worse with the health problems I had at that time.
I debated as to whether I would germinate any seed this year and finally decided and seeded those late late. I did those at Thienemans so they could water them daily and they would be warm and cozy in the hoop house. I brought them home last week but have been unable to transplant anything due to the rains and weather. I am hoping for a few days of sunshine -- please send some my way!
This was my eleventh year as a volunteer at Thieneman's Nursery and helped with the selection of tomato/pepper varieties. I also helped with the "Mater Days" two weeks ago with the sale and assisted the growers with questions they might have. Sure juices me up to be able to talk tomato with interested folks.

I have the August date posted above my computer and plan to be there the good Lord willing!
Gary
