Black Bear variety Tomato 2018 by Black Bear
 

Yes ...I did grow Black Bear Tomatoes this year ….

They were Big and Prolific and ..one .plant left is still growing with green fruit and setting flowers etc.


but many are susceptible to concentric crackings ... bah !

to bad ! They taste great … I think they do better in the cooler weather

and not the Record heat we had ….


will try again next year . But to bad ...melikes to keep the fruit clean and not

risk waste from cracking etc. etc. :cute:

The actual Variety "Black Bear " Indet., regular leaf plants. Large purple/black beefsteak fruits are quite juicy, and have excellent flavor. 8-12 oz

History
Russian origin.
First introduced in SSE 2008 Yearbook by Neil Lockhart of Oblong, Illinois (IL LO N), who obtained seeds from Reinhard Kraft, Neukirchen, Germany .
Reinhard Kraft received seeds from Andrey Baranovski of Minsk, Belarus with a translated name that he felt was racially discriminatory. As it appeared to be a great tomato, Mr. Kraft chose a nice neutral name for it - 'Black Bear' - and shared seeds under this new name.
The original Russian name for this tomato was Negrityonok. However, Negrityonok is a much smaller tomato compared to what Reinhard Kraft, Neukirchen, Germany observed in his growouts. It is obvious that just environmental growing conditions could not be responsible for such a huge difference in fruit sizes, therefore it makes sense to consider Black Bear tomato a different strain.




I grew them again this year ….they are BIG ...Prolific ….Flavourful ….


but I had problems with the concentric splitting ...more than my other varieties …

Forget the ...Name …lol (goofy as it is ….lol)

It sure was a good variety ...except that for me I got the cracks this year .

It could be preventable by my culture practice and the season environment .:cute:

Now that Tatiana has suspended selling seeds, are there any other commercial sources for Black Bear?

I Googled that and couldn't find any other sources.

BUT,in post #1 in this thread Black Bear said he had grown it,and I'm assuming he saved seeds or had seeds left over from what he got from Tania.

So why don't you ask him for some seeds.It wasn't clear to me if it was you asking for seeds or just a general question.

Also note that IMO there are several other dark colored beefsteak type tomatoes as well that are pretty darn good.

Just asking,why focus on just the variety Black Bear?

YIKES ! never thought of that ! I just hoped there would be another limited time opening ...for the Tatiana source …..Yikes !

I will have to try this one again next year ….

It is a vigorous compact producer...etc.


I just picked a few off the vine yesterday .


I have decided I am a "Fussy Black bear " when it comes to this one …


I mean The fruit is good solid meaty ….good taste ...large ...prolific …

good right ? I found if there was the blemish of the concentric ring on top of fruit

I turned it upside down …...and behold !...fruit is gorgeous and dark and meaty !

Real Magazine pix fruit . If I slice a sandwich slice ...from the upside down fruit

I can't even tell there ever was a concentric ring blemish etc.

Please see my post above yours about where to hopefully get some seeds,I checked that out via Google for commercial sources,negative, so actually,from YOU.Which should work since you just said you'd be growing it next year,so YES,you still have seeds left.

I actually avoided growing this one again …….because of the conflict of interest with the name ...:)):)):))


But it suited my "compact and/or dwarf " quest . (so I tried again )


and it had large fruit to boot ! Larger than Chernamor.

I am slowing looking for more blemish free and hold on variety .

But actually it was a good one .


I am going to downsize next year ( so he says ..)

and have less varieties and plants . I collected about 50 + varieties this year .

The black bear was a good one If I knew that Tania source was suspended I would have collected even more seeds .

Carolyn: Sorry to bother you, but to answer your question, I happened to see two posts plugging Black Bear (on this thread and another site) on the same day, and thought fate was nudging me to investigate it.

I asked about commercial sources after a websearch found mentions only by Tatiana and a British supplier, because I don't like to bother growers for a few seeds, especially at this time of year when they are busy cleaning up their gardens.

And yes, there are plenty of other dark varieties to try, Cherokee Chocolate, Tasmanian Choclate and Brad's Black Heart are also high on my list.

I also topped up from Tatiana's last month..
 

As the "Black Bear seed " source for me came from Tatiana's

I did save seeds …..BUT I also ordered from Tatiana's again in December 2018 as soon as the site

was accepting orders again !
