Galina x Grub's Mystery Green F1

Really looking forward to this one - thank you for sharing Raymondo 8)

Will keep you posted, and for now here's a pic of my plants - these should be very similar in the F1 - correct?

Raymondo June 12, 2008 06:48 AM

Yes, they should be pretty similar, although GMG's can be a little variable. The parent GMG for this cross was a good producer of fruit that I could only describe as superb flavourwise, and of course, Galina's Yellow is, IMHO, always good.
Will follow this one keenly. Thanks for posting.

A few close up pics, on top we have Galina x Grub's Mystery Green F1, followed by Grub's Mystery Green and then Galina. So what will the cross results be? Good question, but for now, Galina is a potato leaf (PL) yellow large cherry, and GMG is a green when ripe, half pound beefsteak with fabulous taste (also PL). To date F1 (PL) seems more related to GMG re bud shape - time will tell :-)

Raymondo June 28, 2008 02:44 PM

I'm glad there are some GMG traits showing through. Means the cross was probably successful! It's great that you're able to grow the F1 along with its parent varieties.

This is a really interesting one to me too. I'll look forward to following your progress notes. I was unsuccessful in germinating GMG this year (first year trying it), but I love Galina, and the potential gene combinations of this cross are certainly intriguing. Best of luck with it!

Update on my Galina x Grub's Mystery Green F1 - Plants 1 and 2

Raymondo August 1, 2008 06:12 PM

These look great. What size would you say they are?

PNW_D August 2, 2008 09:04 AM

Ray,

they're just wee babies at this point, but it does look like they will be larger than Galina's no? I'll see if I can get some comparison shots of Galina's and GMG for posting ......

Raymondo August 2, 2008 05:25 PM

Yes, they look as if they'll be bigger. They don't have the Galina shape, more like GMG in that department. They do have the Galina truss formation I think, though I'm working from memory here so not at all reliable! This is so exciting. I love the anticipation.

Everything is so late this year - at least two weeks behind I would think, but we do finally have some colour (one of the earliest in my garden) and it appears yellow is dominate over green (at least in this cross). Both my plants should be similar as this is first generation. The fun starts in F2 ......
Not yet picked - taste test results any day now :wait: - size is saladette.

Raymondo August 31, 2008 06:44 AM

A little cutie. Hope the taste is there. The excitement is mounting!

Hope it's OK to do a bit of a duplicate post - but wanted to keep this thread current ....

Galina x Grub's Mystery Green F1 (canary yellow) - a lovely burst of flavour  with much more depth than Galina; rich, deep nice "acid"/sweet balance. Only down side - skin slightly tough and a wee bit small.

And, here are the fruit from Plant 2 of this cross - much more productive - not yet tasted ...

Raymondo September 3, 2008 04:28 AM

So pleased that the taste was decent. Next generation should provide lots of interesting stuff, in particular, wouldn't it be good to find a great tasting PL yellow the size of GMG.

Update, just to finish this one off for this season .....

one of my earliest, productive, healthly.

And here's my brief notes on Plant 2: juicy, sweet, rich, nice acid - Plant 2 is probably the one to go with - although both were good. Plant 1 a wee bit earlier.

Grub October 16, 2008 01:08 AM

Let me know if you want me to work with it here.
I think you have my addy.
It's my birthday soon.
Best, G.
