any idea what these could be? they were swarming around the only tomato plant i got in the dirt, which is the one that has the problem with yellow shoulders, flying ants? or some kind of little bee maybe? thanks-tom

I would say flying ants. They do that when they swarm to find a new home. Probably no problem for the tomato plant.

Unless they are farming aphids.

May also be subterranean termites, if you have them in your area. I see them take flight every year at around the third week of Sept, here, often after rain ending a dry spell. Crows will sit at the holes where they emerge and pick them off as they come out of the ground.

They are definitely not subterranean termites; termites are solid - no waist where ants have narrow waists.

They look like flying ants to me.

GO CROWS !!!
