any idea what these could be? they were swarming around the only tomato plant i got in the dirt, which is the one that has the problem with yellow shoulders, flying ants? or some kind of little bee maybe? thanks-tom

I would say flying ants. They do that when they swarm to find a new home. Probably no problem for the tomato plant.

Unless they are farming aphids.

May also be subterranean termites, if you have them in your area. I see them take flight every year at around the third week of Sept, here, often after rain ending a dry spell. Crows will sit at the holes where they emerge and pick them off as they come out of the ground.

Look like wee sugar ants to me.
Lord forbid they are fire ants. |

They are definitely not subterranean termites; termites are solid - no waist where ants have narrow waists. They look like flying ants to me. GO CROWS !!! |
