Best New Tomato From Last Year and Your Must Grows Every Year
 

Hi All,

I wondered if you had some new discoveries last year in regard to tomatoes that you will actually be growing again. Also, what are your 5 favorite must grows?

I didn't discover a new one I want to grow again but here are some of my must grows every year.

Sweet Treats - pink cherry type. So sweet and delicious.

Chika - red cherry type. Plant stay small maybe 5 feet max. Really flavorful and sweet

Sunchocola - Purple cherry type. Richness of a black tomato in little package.

Orange Paruche - Looks exactly like Sungold with an added savoriness.

Aunt Ruby's German Green - Large Beefsteak. Rich, sweet with some tang. It's got it all.

Rosella Purple - dwarf purple Beefsteak. Richness and sweet like all the blacks but in a smaller plant.

There you have it. My must grows. Good luck to all in 2020.

Marianna's Peace

Every year is Sungold and Post Office Spoonful. Still searching for "must-grow" big ones.

Last year's really good one, great taste & production, would grow again: Butter Apple (seds from J&L)


Last year's good one, great taste, gorgeous, but light on production: Dark Galaxy.

Husky cherry red.
Good heat resistance and was one of the last plants standing.
Semi determinate so you get flushes of pick-able tomatoes.
Also easy to clone.

**I'm slightly partial to my own discoveries, and like to trial them against many other tomatoes.


Best "new" one for me is Olive Hill. But, I stay generally a year or two behind others in trialing varieties, waiting to see consistently great reviews over a few years.

Absolute must grows for me are: Rebel Yell, Momotaro OP, ISPL, Sungold. NAR usually has a rotation. Tried Dotson Lebanese Heart last summer and it might make it’s way back. I am still deciding if Black Cherry will be back- and other than that, still deciding.

Finally got Ambrosia Orange to grow true. It's spectacular. If you like super-sweet cherries, It's a must grow.

three from my anna russian cross project.

a smallish orange plum tomato i will call lempi line.

a saladette size oxheart type i will call aili line.

a fat pink plum shaped i will call mama helen line.

also plan to grow out red field cherry cross again to make sure flavor is consistent
from plant to plant. unsure what stage this one is at.

Last year I finally discovered what all the fuss was about Sungold. I get it now, and I'll gladly plunk down my pennies every four-five years for new pack of seeds.

Also started exploring more of the dwarfs and last year tried Sleeping Lady and Golden Gypsy -- both will be back!

Last year’s best tasting.. if only I could remember..!
Probably one of the cherries - Dr Carolyn. Only approproate, as a memorial to Carolyn who passed away last summer.
I will grow it again this season.
Another must each year.. something black. Crimean or Tula, never mind!
Also.. a pink cocktail from Russia
Something green
Yellow plum shaped

How does Ambrosia Orange compare to Ambrosia Gold? Where did you get your seeds? When you say that you "finally got it to grow true" does that mean that the seed line is unstable?

My guess is that you like SunGold in the just barely underripe (to most of us) stage. The darker it gets, the sweeter it gets, until it then gets overripe and losses almost everything.


A SunGold is a terrible thing to waste.:?:
