Burpee's Jersey Boy
 

Saw today that Burpee is offering "Jersey Boy" a cross of Brandywine & Rutgers. They are calling it a hybrid so who knows if it will be stable in future generations. I'm going to give it a try. If it is as good as Brandy Boy it will be a winner.:)

Red Rose is an open pollinated, stable cross of Brandywine x Rutgers, sold by Tomato Growers Supply for over a dozen years that I know of. The only reason I could see for buying Burpee's extremely expensive version of this cross would be to collect F2 seeds to spend several years selecting your own version of what you can buy now for less than half the price and a fraction of the effort.

Tomato Growers Supply has updated their website for 2015 and their "free with $15.00 order " seeds is a packet of Red Rose. Isn't that a coincidence!!!!!

Cecil, you do know that Bucks County Hybrid is Burpee's newest name for their version of Red Brandywine, yes?

I can't remember what name it was first called, but I grew it out, ordered plants and also grew RB from my own seeds and saw no difference at all.

I gave up on Burpee for anything, many years ago, and look at their catalog now, mostly pictures. They bought out Cook's Garden and that catalog now is nothing like it was when Shep Ogden and his wife ran it.

Burpee was once one of the premier companies back in the 40's to maybe 60's, but no more IMO.

Burpee also sold "Bucks County" as "Little Brandywine" for a short while. I have seed packets for both Bucks County and Little Brandywine, and there was an extensive discussion about this at Tomatoville back some time ago. I think a couple of Brandywine Red aficionados grew and compared the three named varieties and got very similar results.

I first saw it listed as Red Brandywine Hybrid many years ago and to be honest I was really upset with that. In my post above yours I was so upset that I ordered those seeds, also plants from Burpee and then my own true OP RB.

And saw no difference at all.

I don't remember a Little Brandywine name associated with Burpee, little in comparison to what?

I couldn't remember whether it was BVGardener or Worth who grew the Little Brandywine in comparison to Red Brandywine, Landis Valley. Both guys are from Texas. I got them confused, I suppose.

BVGardener is the fellow who crossed Cherokee Purple x German Red Strawberry attempting to get a purple strawberry. Many of us now grow a selection of his that we call Not Purple Strawberry ... a truly great tasting tomato. The "BV" stands for Brazos Valley. He used to be a wonderful contributor to the tomato discussions.

I found him and his name is Jay.And I also remember the many pictures of his property and gardens, and something about his mowing his front lawn.:)

I knew of his connection with some JD=Special ones but I didn't know that he was the one who bred NPS.

Hey, just wondering how the jersey boys turned out, thinking about ordering some.

Grew a couple last year along with some of the burpee hybrid marriage series for my mom.
NONE of them had any flavor for me. Was only one trial for what its worth.
Also include brandy boy in this. But it seems like folks here love brandy boy.

Yea, well I was hit with a massive dose of Cercospora Leaf spot/Mold and had to pull all my original plants. I had to go shopping and found few choices. However, I learned why people who do like hybrids, like Better Boy. Very tasty and productive and will be in my garden again this year. Still trying to pick out another productive red slicer hybrid.
