Cherry tomato suitable for container
 

Hello everyone,

First of all sorry for my english not always perfetc (french)

Everything is in the subject :D
I am looking for a new varieties to grow next year.

My criteria are:
- Cherry tomato (small tomato)
- Early tomato (I think cherry tomato is early in general) < 60 days
- Which can grow in a pot: I have 24L but I allow myself up to 40L maximum
- For colors, It doesn't matter
- Tomato with good taste and good yield

That's all :)) do you have any suggestions?

I chatted with a tomato passioante in private and she advised me to buy some seeds of snow white or black cherry. Black Cherry looks pretty cool but with his size of 1m70 2m00, I'm afraid it's too big for me and not suitable in pots.

By the way, when do you recommend buying seeds to obtain the 2018 harvest seeds? Around October or December ?

I like Terrenzo as a contaner variety. Lizzano is from the same seed company and also gets good reviews. Maglia Rosa is another great compact variety. The fruit are oblong pink cheries.

While Black Cherry is a wonderful variety, my friend just showed me a picture of her 9 foot tall plant.

I second Maglia Rosa. I love tomatoes that are as pretty as they taste. I can’t eat enough of them to stay up with production. I think that 2 I received seeds from Marsha that would work out well for you in containers are Rebel Alliance and Reverend Michael Keyes. Both are multifloras that produce abundant amounts of flavorful cherries without any cracking. RA is Black with somewhat of a heart shape and RMK is a red grape.

Black Cherry, Sungold, Garnet, all cherries do well in containers. Every single one, in my experience. And also larger saladettes such as Jaune Flamme and Red Zebra do well.

You can grow any tomato in a container, I have not found one that does not work.

I stopped growing Black Cherry here years ago as it grew a huge plant last time I had it.

Any cherry would be fine, just cut the top off when it gets big enough.

I have took in consideration your comments and I looked on internet a lot for 2 days.
And even if every single cherry tomato is suitable in container if you cut off, I finally decide to add an other crtiteria :))

So Maglia Rosa as you indicate me looks good for me. And I found an other one which fits my criterias: Gold nugget 8-)
In addition this variety is available in France for selling.

I grow the complete opposite. I grow huge Indeterminate cherry tomato plants because that is what grows and produces well where I live in Texas. We don't all garden in the same place.

I see your posts here at Tomatoville at 3, but you may have done a lot of reading during your 3 years of being a member here. You are getting replies from some that grow tomatoes for a living, and replies from around the world. Tomatoville is a wonderful place for us to learn about growing tomatoes.

I personally have sent and received tomato seeds from France, and too many other countries to count. If you find a variety that you cannot get in France - just ask. I'm sure that many of us would feel proud to mail you some seeds.

Yes, all tomatoes can be grown in containers. Especially cherry tomatoes.

If you are looking for extra early, then I second SunGold. And yes, definitely Gold Nugget, very early and prolific - (it is determinate, but NOT small!) Also Koralik, Swet Million F1, Gardeners Delight..

Several Artisan cherries grow really compact and produce well, Pink Tiger is my favorite but Maglia Rosa is similar.

I'll also gladly send you some varieties, it is no hassle within the EU.

I make my choice for the following year.

- For the Dwarf, I will continue to grow Wild Fred (I'm going soon show you my 2018 result in a new thread). I plan to buy Rosella Purple for an smaller variety

- For micro Dwarf, I have already buy Red robin last week in a plant exhibition close to Paris. I plan to buy an other variety, surely a yellow or orange one to change.

- For the cherry tomato, I plan to buy gold Nugget

Which container size do you advise me to get for each king of my furtur tomatoe ? Always 5 gallons pot ?

One of our members here, dfollet, is a breeder of microdwarfs, and his varieties are the only ones I have enjoyed eating.

Whatever container size you choose, I recommend bottom watering. Put the container in a shallow bin and let it wick the water (or fertilizer solution) from below. I have much better luck with my container plants that way.
