Sex Toys as Pollinating Devices

My girlfriend left a few things at my house. I decided to put them to good use.

My high tunnel tomatoes are growing well: http://i.imgur.com/2pjrOaN.jpg But I am not happy with the fruit set.

I made two pollinators. The first is a basically a vibrator on a stick:
http://i.imgur.com/kD0SXU8.jpg
The stick is the handle of a basting brush that came with a set of grill utensils. The brush is rubber and can be removed from the metal handle. I taped the vibrator to the rubber mount so the handle can be easily removed. Having the handle makes it go a lot faster. http://i.imgur.com/sRKsrNf.jpg

The other pollinator is a sex toy called a "micro bullet." They are about $10 on amazon. The one I have is the double bullet: http://i.imgur.com/rIRofVN.jpg If using a vibrating pollinator is supposed to mimic the vibrations of a bumble bee, then this thing is like a bee on a wire. I can't imagine anything resembling a real bee any more closely. The bullet is more fun to use, but it is slower than the stick vibe. It was covered in pollen immediately upon using: http://i.imgur.com/JEGXx9o.jpg I can see the pollen fly when it touches a flower.

I realize electric toothbrushes are the norm to use as pollinators, but they are expensive and have tiny batteries. I think sex toys are more powerful, much more diverse, and a more cost-effective use of battery life.

I assume when you say your girlfriend left these at your house, that means she is not coming back?

I tried that and the pollen was flying before it even touched the flower! I swear this has never happened before!

We got in a fight about a year ago and she moved out, but we didn't break up. I usually go over to her house anyway. She was a little mad about the bullet toy, but I told her it was a business decision - using it as a pollinator would make enough tomatoes to buy another one several times over.

This has me cracking up! Do you think this will work with other veges... Okra, cukes?

Thanks

I don't see why not. I really like the mount on the stick vibe, where I can pull out the stick out and put the vibe in my pocket in case anyone shows up unexpectedly at the greenhouse, thereby preventing an awkward conversation.

O...M...G!!! Too funny!!

I'd love to see some peoples faces when reading this!! lol

Whatever works!!

OK, now I really have seen everything! I just showed this thread to my husband, and he said, " now I know why you spend so much time on this website". You never know what will come next LOL!

A person could put a real twist to these words.

They've worked very well for me... I prefer the "mini", "micro", or "pocket" versions because they fit better in my pocket with the other garden related tools I always carry: flashlight, pocket-knife, magnifying glass, 9/16" wrench, camera, etc... And the smaller versions are more discrete.

AKmark June 6, 2014 01:18 AM

Cole, I dare you to make a youtube of you pollinating your tomatoes, it would probably go viral. lol

Cole_Robbie June 6, 2014 02:15 AM

Mark, I'd end up on Tosh.o, "We flew vibrator tomato guy to Hollywood for this week's web redemption."

My girlfriend used to live in Alabama, where sex toys are illegal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Obscenity_Enforcement_Act
So I should add the disclaimer that if you live in the state of Alabama and attempt to pollinate your tomatoes this way, you could end up violating state obscenity laws.

I'm already starting to see a lot more tiny green tomatoes instead of dropped blossoms, so I think it's working. I haven't told anyone yet in person, just tomatoville. You people are the only ones who would understand.

pol_bishop25 June 6, 2014 02:37 AM

This was so funny to read. You have my thanks for the nice laugh :) Anyway, seems like a good idea, especially when it's doing the right job. I am thinking to try it as well, just want to see the looks on my neighbours' faces. :D

MissS June 6, 2014 11:30 PM

I can't believe it! Only at T'ville could this happen. You didn't tell anyone, but only took pictures and posted it on a public forum. LOL,LOL,LOL......

And we were all laughing about using toothbrushes...

I am cracking up that you are in Utah of all places. I thought everyone from there was too uptight to do such a thing. :)

And to Patti - you people are the only ones who would understand!

Cole, reverse engineering at it's finest. I think hot pink would have been a more appropriate color but I doubt the flowers will care. Anyway here is a link to a vibrator I built and won't cause as much attention as yours but gets the job done.

From what I can see in your pics, Germany is beautiful.

RootLoops June 7, 2014 09:58 AM

i'm pretty sure they are illegal here too, but so is alcohol so go figure! if it works it works

MissS June 7, 2014 06:15 PM

I told my daughter about your thread here. She was laughing. I said "could you see me out there with a vibrator in front of the neighbors buzzing my tomatoes?" She replied " Oh yes, yes I could. You would do that."

So I suppose that you are right in saying that we are the only ones who would understand.

OK everyone, out of the bedroom and into the yard with the sex toys.

Enjoy.......

I would but I dont have an extension cord that will handle 100 amp 480 volt 3 phase.:(

I travel to Wyoming to buy my devices. And always pay in cash....

"Can I help you?"
"Uh... I need a device to vibrate tomato flowers?"
"Sure. What size?"
"Uh... Smaller is better."

I left the store empty handed the one time that the clerk tried to card me... I was almost 50 by then.

Chucker June 7, 2014 10:31 PM

I'm pretty sure I would mess up my Amazon history and recommendations pretty good if I tried to buy (or even shop for) one of these pollinators.

Sounds like you need an industrial strength generator to run that "toy", Worth! Have a feeling you could send you a cloud of pollen that could be seen for miles if you used it. ;)

That is a really good point. It makes me want to buy a few cases of them to sell on amazon. I will only call them tomato pollinators and label them "for use on tomatoes only."

In a post dated May 3, 2014 on thread http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=31459 I marvelled about American inventiveness shown in the use of a light dimmer switch to stabilize the temperature of a heating mat.
Now I must say I’m absolutely flabbergasted. I hope Edison can see from above that his spirit is still flying high and the uses of his discoveries infinite.

Trouble is much of Edisons stuff is out dated.
NikolaTesla is the inventor where most of our technology comes from.
Just the other day they had on the news were they are working on wireless AC transmission in the house.

This technology is based solidly on Teslas inventions and ideas.

Just a thought.:)

Thanks, loulac. I'm just getting started. I was thinking of mounting several of the bullet toys to a board, letting the bullets dangle, and then making that board travel along the row of tomatoes on a rail of some sort. It could be an automated mega-pollinator.

Although if I had wireless power transmission, I could just tape bullets to flower clusters, and there would be no wires. That would be even cooler.
