2012 Potato Kickoff

Weather has been great in New England in the 70's and it hasn't rain like some other springs around here. The soil was a dream to work with so I spend a good chuck of time this weekend planting potatoes. Tomorrow rain is in the forecast so I am glad the weather was cooperating so far.

I finished the first round. I planted 2 raised beds that are 4 x 12 made 3 rows (center row is shifted to fit in between the other 2 rows). Total of 24 seeds per bed. This time I left plenty of room for them to bulk up between 16 to 18 inches per plant and 8-9 varieties per bed. Also a 2 x 8 raise bed with alternating plants to fit 10 plants per bed. Those will not have irrigation just rain and ny criteria is yield, disease resistance and berry set since those are good flavor potatoes from samplers of 2010-2011.

I have a ground area that is 8ft x 8ft I made into the 1st year tuber plot for evaluation. This is the a sunny spot and always yields good. The selection is flavor, berry set, yield, disease resistance also not irrigated just with rain only.

I still have to plant the late round with the maori spuds plus some extra spuds that I got from Wingnut any odds and ends and TPS seedlings. I literaly ran out of garden space for potatoes! I am borrowing of the corn patch for them but hubby does not know yet there is no corn this year :P:cute::lol::?:8-)

I have a row that's sprouted in the last few days. I think those are the Red Norlands. My whites haven't shown themselves yet.

Hey good luck Wendy, maybe the good start to the season weather wise is a good omen to the rest of the growing season.
Just hope your hubby doesn't spit the dummy when he finds out there's no corn.

It has been unusually mild here this year as well, but I think I'll play it safe. May 15th is my last frost day, although I doubt I'll see another this year.
