Anyone Grow Orach?
I am growing it for the first time this year and it about 18 inches tall now and a single stock with leaves growing out from the stock. If I pinch the top, will it grow into two branches like basil does?
It is a very beautiful deep red and I am growing it in my front garden beds. Lots of people comment on it when they walk by. :) |
I assumed you were asking about ocra:?!?:
|
No. Orach. :)

I have tried the grow this but, it would not even germinate. This happened twice. I bought more seed but, the results were the same. Maybe I will learn how some day.

When i tried to grow it the darn sparrows stole the sprouts every time.

Svtrob, is ocra red? I haven't grown it.
peppero, I haven't had great luck with germination either. I started about 10 seeds and only two germinated. I think I may try rubbing the tiny things on sandpaper to scuff them so the germinate more easily. heirloomguy, the sparrows pluck the seedlings right out of the ground?! |
Orach and okra are two different things. There is also red okra called Burgundy which I have grown. My husband loves okra. It is difficult to get good crops in our climate but I persevere and if I get a couple of meals out of it he is happy. I usually grow the green varieties.

I tried germinating outside but had no luck. Next time i will start it under the grow lights for sure. |
I decided to go ahead and top off one of the tall stocks and it did split the way that basil does. It is a beautiful color and somewhat similar to spinach in flavor but more tart. I like it!

I bought a pack of the color mix at Baker Creek ( I think I have an older sample from a mmmm and will try that too) .I planted half the pack based on comments , wanting to try one of two if possible I soaked the seeds in water for 2 days (changing each day) and have at least a dozen with little tails in the water cup. Not a fan at all of giant noble or any of the other summer spinaches. We'll see ...
