The more you take care of a strawberry the more it rewards you with death.
What can I say.
They like a sandy well drained soil almost like a cactus from my experience not from the internet.
This will reward you with the best tasting strawberries.
Ozark Beauty and Quinault are the berries of choice for me.
If you can find them try them out.
Once a plant starts to croak on you pull it up replant and keep trying.

I put the last two plants out of their misery today, gonna head to the nursery soon to see if I can find one of the varieties you mentioned, Worth. Either way, whatever I get as a replacement will be repotted to ensure proper drainage, even though I know these two plants weren't overwatered. I think it may have been verticillium wilt? I dunno, but even the new leaves were being affected by whatever it was.

Quinault is one for Texas. They like growing in straw and black soil. They also like being left alone. The best strawberries I've ever tasted were grown by an aunt who moved into a rent house - where they were already planted. My aunt had no idea they were there. But they sure tasted good.

I'm glad to read that Quinault and Ozark Beauty are everbearing, that's what I wanted and why I went with Elan in the first place.

My parents grew a ton of strawberries too many strawberries.:lol:
Our freezer was full of the things plus the jam that was made.
It was my dads favorite fruit I think he almost ate them every day in one way or another.
The Strawberry Quick was his favorite drink.
Strawberry ice cream.
Strawberry malts and milk shakes.:lol:

Nope, we luckily live on a hill and the complex has great drainage throughout! :lol: Just been dealing with car issues all weekend so haven't been on Tville much. (posted about said car issues in my photo gallery thread)

Strawberries are my favorite too! I love macerated strawberries on angel food cake with real whipped cream. Really though I could macerated strawberries on just about anything. Whenever we get a house, a proper strawberry patch is one of my top priorities!

Never had much luck with strawberries in containers, not sure if the shallow soil heats too quickly and cooks the roots or not. Overwatering will surely cause fungus. Overcrowding is certainly not good either, best spaced 12" apart or 1 plant per container.
