Orange County/San Diego members?
I would love to start a plant swap with people in my area. Anyone out there?
|
bugsy, where are you? I'd love to have a tomato tasting event in So Cal this yr.

I would love to attend a tasting/swap. I'm sure many Tomatovillians live in So. Cal. Let's try to have one. I'm in Carlsbad. There are too many tomatoes to try and definitely not enough time...
|
Let's see who all responds and go from there. I set up the original NORCATT several yrs ago. Will have to search through the brain cells to remember tips/pitfalls. We will have to figure out when the most tomatoes will be ripe and meet somewhere that it isn't too hot. :-)

SO Cal Knows Its Tasty TOMatoes Event (too much time to think today) |
Count me in on a local tasting event! Keep me posted, Barb!
|
I'd be interested in an event this summer.
|
I'm in!
MANY varieties to bring too :) |
Well, sorry I didn't check this thread sooner. I didn't think there was interest. Miserable year so far. That said, my Wes, Black Cherry and Rostova are producing nicely.
What about you guys? |
bugsy, it's been a miserable year for me, too! At this time I probably won't have ripe tomatoes until early August, if that. And I planted out April 10th! Been too cold and damp in the mornings. Plus, I have something going on with my plants, the dreaded yellowing leaves with brown polka dots is making it's way up the stalks. What a disappointing year! :(
|
Bad year for me too. Something spotty after all the cold weather, maybe bacterial speck. Lately, been using sulfer dust for what I think is tomato russet mites. Have the symptoms, but cant find a stong enough lense to confirm. Need 14X. Reif Red Hearts were quite early. Bloody butchers, and some cherries. But, I babble....:panic:
I too am interested in tomato event! LInda |
Hi, Linda! I'm sorry you're having a bad season too. It's such a disappointment. I'm looking for early seeds to try and get a small harvest of Stupice, Kimberly and Wonder Boy before December. I'm desparate for some good tomatoes.
|
I'm in San Diego (near Mission Bay), and a get together like this sounds fun :)
I have 15 varieties planted, and many green fruit, but so far have only picked two from my Moskvich a couple of weeks ago (which were pretty darn yummy!). The rest are taking their sweet time getting ripe. I'm worried that black spot is going to take out a couple of the potato leaf ones before I get a harvest, but hopefully now that June gloom is burning off the plants will bounce back some so I will have a nice variety. |
San Diego tomato tasting
I'm in! Just picked a 1.3 lb. Omar's Lebanese!:D

Over 70 plants and 40 different varieties
Hi,
I am in Chula Vista and have over 70 plants and 40 different varieties of tomatoes. Have some plants left if anyone needs them. Picking tomatoes every day. tommy |
Well, guys, my year was officially miserable. Blight got a lot of everything. That said, I got a few good tomatoes, before destruction.
I'd love to eventually start a regular SoCal tomato gathering. I guess i won't be doing it this year though. Hope there there are people out there who want to do it and had a better year than I did. |
As a newbie I would love to arrange a meet and greet for a tasting, trading etc sometime this season.
|
Did anything happen in 2011. Anything Planned for 2012?
|
2011 was the worst year for me ever! LOL! Probably got 6 tomatoes off of 5 plants. This year is super! Great weather, no May gray or temps in the low 40's. I'm hoping to have tons this year. Linda, Barbara how are your maters doing?
Janie:P |
I live in San Bernardino County and I know many others live in Riverside County. Should we start a gathering that included more of us for 2012? I don't mind driving.
My tomato's have been a failure almost every year. I hope this is a better year too. I do have one tomato set. :)) My season is short here so I won't have tomatoes until late this year. It would be nice to taste some of these tomatoes that I have been working so hard to get. Right now I have 33 varieties in the ground. I have more varieties that I planted by seed for my fall crop. |
CinnamintStick, Coronabarb lives in Corona and Linda lives in Sun City. I know they would be interested in a get together. I'm only growing 9 plants this year. They are:
*Druzba (2) *Pruden's Purple *Old German (desperate for one last heirloom, don't have high hopes for it this year. *Kelloggs Breakfast *Aunt Ruby's German Green *Neves Azorean Red *Red Brandywine *Stupice If we get together over the summer we can trade seeds, should have plenty by then. What are you growing?:)) |
We should try to meet up "down south" or "out west" for the best temps. I dont really have many in the ground yet.
Druzba Sun Gold Early Girl Purdens Purple Brandy Boy Red Brandywine Striped Roaman Orange Banana Opalka San Marzano Redorta Moskvitch Moravsky Div Rosella Purple Silvery Fir Tree Dr Lyle Goldmans Italian American Burbank. Many more getting pot bound as I write this, waiting for me to get a burst of energy.... |
Some of mine are hybrids, some are heirlooms. Here is what I have in the ground now.
Phoenix Rutgers Heatmaster Summer set Marglobe Pineapple Chocolate Cherry Super sweet 100 Mortgage Lifter Mortgage Lifter ??? PL German Johnson Better Boy Oxhart Caspian Pink Giant Belgium Black Krim Nebraska Wedding Brandywine Red Brandywine PL Red Brandywine RL Cherokee Purple Stupice Arkansas Traveler Old German Orange Russian Great White German Queen Black Prince Striped German |
I think this is going to be a great year for our maters! Linda, I have over 20 maters on my Stupice and it's not a foot tall! What a hearty tomato. Hopefully Barbara will post soon and give us some input on where she stands with her garden. Wherever anyone wants to go is fine by me. Maybe we can arrange a carpool? A BYOF picnic?
|
Hey So Cal tomatomanics, Steve Goto (remember him, Barb?) now gives tomato tastings all over the area. Here is his website http://www.gotomato.us.com/upcoming-events/. Maybe we want to attend one of his tastings, he always has dozens of maters. Barb and I volunteered at one of his tastings here in Temecula and it was great? What does everyone think?
|
I would love to attend a tasting. Are any in So California?
My tomatoes are looking great. Nothing is eating them yet. A picnic sounds great too. How does a pot luck sound? Maybe show off some of are garden recipes. |
Im surprised at the low turnout of socal members compared to NC or Florida. They seem to have the corner on the tomato market. I was under the impression that california was very ag friendly :)
COME ON SOCAL! |

COME ON SOCAL!
I don't think it's a social thing, I haven't had a decent tomato harvest in years! Last year I got like 5 tomatoes all season, but this year the weather is sending out good vibes and my maters are looking great! We will definately have a get-together this year and hopefully a seed trading event at the same time! |
Hi, just wondering if anything is going on this season. I'm new to gardening and would love to attend a tasting/ seed swap. Any interest out there this year?? Hope everyone's season is better this year! Thanks ~Christine
