Double Helix Farms 2015

I have some great Heirloom and Open Pollinated tomatoes for 2013. I have everything from really early like Quedlinburger Fruhe Liebe to later season monsters like Red Giant From Vienna.

Henryka, Jugo, Linhart’s Giant, Tarasenko #2, and Mikado Pink come to mind as some of my new favorites.

Raspberry Miracle, Mikado Black, Rabideau, and Plum Bush were great again this year.

Rote Hertztomate is the earliest heart I have ever grown and it gave me my first tomato in 42 days.

I have close to 80 new tomato varieties this year and most are available for the first time in the United States. I also have 30 new peppers and I have added more squash, cucumbers, herbs, and a host of other vegetable seeds.

I even have the highly sought after Glass Gem Corn and some TPS or true potato seed.

Thanks for everyone's support.

Steve,

What variety of potato did you save your TPS from?

Hi! Can you comment on the disease resistance of the Turkish Smooth Cucumber? I'd really like to try that one, but have trouble with bacterial wilt.

I'll probably try it anyway though. :)

doublehelix February 10, 2013 11:28 AM

I doubt that it has any resistance and you should probably look at something else. I would have a soil test done to confirm that it is Bacterial Wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum).

If it is, then you might want to go to a hybrid cucumber with resistance. I am not familiar enough with cucumbers to suggest one, but there is a thread here at Tomatoville on BW resistant cucumbers.

Thanks.

Thanks, Steve. I could be wrong as I'm pretty new at this, but I had a lot of cucumber beetles and the plants' demise (cukes, squash and muskmelons) looked like the descriptions of bacterial wilt. Definitely due for some soil tests though.

Ah well, this would have made my Turkish husband happy. I did buy some supposedly resistant hybrids and guess I should stick with those this year.

Sugar Plum Gold

I ordered Sugar Plum Gold this year from Double Helix Farms and I wanted to say what a great tomato plant this has been for me. I planted 2 of them in pots by my door so I would have tomatoes right outside waiting for me. Lots of yellow plum tomatoes! Without this plant I would have had a dismal tomato year up until now (as the rest of my tomatoes are finally starting to turn colors). I have mad some sauces out of them and it is quite good. Will definitely grow next year, but I might grow in the garden instead of the pots.
Sugar Plum Gold is on the left, the ones on the right are some Bumblebees.

Very nice website and interesting varieties! Do you ship to Canada?

Has anyone heard from Steve at Double Helix? There is a notation at his website stating that it would be down for a few weeks while he dealt with some 'health issues'; but that notation has been there for several months.

I saw that myself recently, but it said down for maintenance just a couple of days ago when I accessed it.

If health issues I can understand, b'c he's been fighting, and I mean fighting, two infectious diseases that he acquired where he lives, maybe two years ago at least.

Last I heard from Steve was maybe about two months ago when he sent me a box of those wonderful small cherry tomatoes that he'd been working with and asked which ones I liked the best and I posted that somewhere here.

I can e-mail him, but he doesn't always get back to me quickly, that I also know, but I'll try. I think I also have his phone number somewhere as well.

I just checked and he last visited on Aug 13th, 2013.

When I placed an order with him last year: I remarked how my wife and I were real salsa addicts. He included a bonus pack of 'Plum Bush' seeds with our order, along with his personal salsa recipe; which proved to be quite tasty. Sincerely hope he is okay.

carolyn137 December 2, 2013 02:10 PM

Steve just got back to me from the e-mail I sent him and he said the website should hopefully be back up in 2-3 weeks.

Yes, he has and still is having, some major health problems, but I'm not going to go into any specifics on that. And is in contact with MD's about it as he has been all summer.

His growouts for seed have been done by someone else locally and he was able to grow in pots at home some or most of the targetted varieties to taste and take pictures.

Very glad to hear his website will be up and running soon, but dismayed to hear that he is still struggling with health issues. Thanks for the 'heads up'.

Diriel December 2, 2013 04:40 PM

Hope Steve beats the odds.

remy December 2, 2013 11:16 PM

I just heard about this. I do hope he is all better real soon.

austinnhanasmom December 28, 2013 11:34 AM

Website is functioning and I can now finalize my 2014 grow list :-)

Thanks Steve!!

tnpeppers December 28, 2013 12:09 PM

Good to see the website back on line, Steve!

simmran1 December 29, 2013 11:47 PM

Thanks. I've ordered as well, (already)

I think clarification of a change in web address to:

www.doublehelixfarms.com might be helpful, as a search turned up .net for me- and bluehost is of no use, if you know what i mean, Randy

I knew Steve was having surgery for his knees, along with his other medicalissues and he called me tonight and asked me to do an updat here.

Both knees had surgery on June 18th and there were complications, the major one being a confirmed blood clot in the calf, and that meant ER and a hospital stay of a week and additional meds.

He's back home and has to use a walker, has a Home Health Aide that comes in but no PT yet.

He's been in a lot of pain and has spent most of his time in bed

If his condition continues to improve he hopes to be able to drive in a few weeks.

Most important is that he said he still has some orders to send out and hopes to do so by the end of this week, and hopes that folks understand the reason for the delay

He makes lots of crosses so I had to ask him about that.He said he taught a local lady how to do BRIXlevels and she and another lady bring the fruits to him inside. He also had two friends visit, from out of town, and they helped for a short time as well,

Me being who I am,I had to ask him what he was doing for meals,he said his one son works in a restaurant,so that looks good.:)

it's been several years now that he's been dealing with two tick acquired diseases and a while with knee problems aswell,so I hope all will be on the mend and better soon.

Wow, that's just awful. Sending good vibe his way.

epsilon July 13, 2014 11:08 PM

oh wow, I hope Steve is doing better now. Knee surgeries are a p.i.t.a. I was going to ask a few questions about the some stuff and drop cultural notes on others. But that can be done later, for now I hope Steve has a swift recovery.

tnpeppers July 14, 2014 06:37 AM

Here in tick-infested New Hampshire (so many it has many thinking 'Biblcial plague"), there are doctors who believe lyme disease to be a 'myth'. Several folks I know are dealing with this 'myth', and it isn't pleasant.

I don't know of any MD's, or PA's or NP's who think that Lyme disease is a myth, at least in my area which is also tick infested, but I do know of some who don't believe there's a condition called Chronic Lyme Disease.

Just this Spring Freda who does my gardening and cleaning for me has been bitten twice and Angie, who gets my groceries for me has been bitten twice. What you do is to take the tick with you to the MD or whatever ASAP and standard protocol is two Doxycycline tabs and then watch for any other symptoms. Some have the standard bullseye rash, as Freda did a couple of years ago, some don't.If you don't know how to remove the tick let the MD or whomever do it for you.

A single tick can be harboring more than one infectious agent at the same time, such as Erlichiosis, Bartonella, Babesia, as well as the Lyme disease pathogen.

Yes, I used to teach infectious disease and the immune response to med students . Lyme disease is not new, but has spread I think, quicker than expected b'c of the life cycle involving mice and deer.

OK, I'm done now, and stepping down from the lecture podium to go get breakfast.:)

Carolyn, who thinks we ought to keep comments here about Steve and no more blatherings from Carolyn about diseases.;)

SharonRossy July 14, 2014 09:12 AM

We all wish him a quick recovery! I have also heard of some terrible outcomes from undiagnosed Lyme disease incidents. Not sure if the tick population has moved north to Canada yet, but it always worries me. Good luck to Steve on all fronts!

tnpeppers July 14, 2014 10:01 AM

My wife 's PCP believes that lyme disease is a fabrication of homeopaths and other practitioners of 'alternative medicine'. She has a different PCP now.

tnpeppers July 14, 2014 10:07 AM

On the other hand; when I was bit by a tick a few years back; they did run the protocol Carolyn discussed...brought the tick in, and ran some antibiotics thru me. Same doctor's office, mind you...different PCP.
