My Trichocereus is Going to Bloom!
I've had this cactus for about 20 years now. In all that time it's only bloomed twice, so it's a pretty big deal when it does. It blooms at night and has huge beautiful flowers. Some folks even have "flower parties" when their's open up.
I'ts not much to look at right now, these are the beginning buds. I've counted 9 so far, not sure how many will make it. I'll keep you posted on the progress. :) |

Not really related but another flower in the Bay Area is going to bloom this week, and it's a strange one. I believe it relies on flies for pollination.

I love cacti & succulents and have a growing collection. For showy flowers, you can't beat the epis. Too bad they are done for me here for the most part but I spotted a couple about to bloom soon.
Mojave, any updates? |

Mojave, any updates?
No real change yet, I suspect that will change in a couple more weeks. When the flowers take off they really size up fast! :) |
They're taking their time, here they are 3 weeks later.

Are you expecting yellowish white petals? About a hands' length?
|
You are so patient. I think if something only bloomed once every 20 years it would have already been replaced in my garden. It takes all kinds of gardeners, I have never been able to really appreciate cactus and succulents.

Those are beautiful. Climbing cactus decided to flower this past spring after a span of rains, produced more or less pitaya flowers. I counted in the high 20s initially, then it went down to about 15. Fleeting but beautiful. Hope they last longer on the Trichocereus. |
Here's a top and bottom view of the largest flower. You can see the sepals starting to separate.
I'm guessing tomorrow night or Saturday night! :D |
