Odds to get a dwarf
 

I have F3 non dwarf seeds from the Morty family that are chartreuse PL. What are the chances to get a chartreuse PL dwarf from these seed?

I believe dwarf, chartreuse and PL are recessive traits, so all the offspring should be chartreuse and PL. (If not, blame a bee!)

If the non-dwarf parent plant is a carrier for the trait, 1/4 of the offspring will be dwarf. :D

If it is not (homozgous for non-dwarf), then none of them will be dwarf. :(

Like too many things in life, it depends on who the parents were :twisted:

Either it is or it isn't, since we aren't dealing with a population.

Easier to do the experiment - as you know from looking at these crosses, the dwarf trait shows very early at the seedling stage. Plant, say, 20-25 seeds and you should see 1 or two short ones (maybe more, but we are trying to account for probability/luck by planting more than 4) if it is a carrier of that trait. You will also see the chartreuse and PL traits; weirdness there suggests you might have had inadvertent bee pollination and then all odds are out the window.

What we've noticed in this project that if an interesting indeterminate shows up in the F2 (in other words, when dwarf hunting, an interesting indeterminate shows up), grow out of enough saved seeds can lead to a dwarf, though the odds are longer.

I've also noticed that the chartreuse gene makes the dwarfs lankier, and harder to spot as dwarfs.

But potato leaf as a trait should stabilize quite quickly - we've not played enough with the chartreuse gene to know if it does as well.
