Grow Roses ?
I'm no "rose-pro"
but I do have a couple of bushes in my flower beds. I just wanted to share with you guys a rose called "new day". I saw it on Monday, and just had to snap a pic for you guys. Does anyone else grow roses ? Any tricks to the trade / photo's ? ~ Tom |
I love, love, love my roses. And I love yours too! Is it fragrant?
These tender roses are wintered over indoors here. I have a room which can be darkened and kept barely above freezing during winter. I also have a number of hardy roses, but these are the ones I love. You're kidding! Wish I knew of the shortcut to fame ages ago. Any chance of an Oprah interview? Psssst: I grow roses, but wouldn't admit it here. Love the smell of lime sulphur in the morning. Just mucking around Young Tom, old buddy. Nice rose. Cut it and put in a bedside vase. You'll be popular and the bedroom will smell nice. |
That is a beautiful rose Tom. Yellow is my favorite color for roses.
Gorgeous pictures Sherry! Can you post a list of the names of your roses? We have been growing roses for 20 years. The best tip I know is to plant them in full sun and give them plenty of water. I'll see if I can get some recent pictures, esp. of our new favorite, a Jackson Perkins floribunda named Tuscan Sun. |

My family were commercial flower growers from the early 1910's in California. Everything from carnations to roses. I grew up around flowers and seeing all of the different types and colors, the scent of the flower cooler and flower market in the mornings, walking the greenhouses with my dad, all good memories. We grew mostly, as I remember it, JP roses, like Forever Yours, Tropicana, Peace, and a yellow one I don't remember.
Professionally, i also have had the opportunity to design several formal rose gardens, what a blast they are. So many types and forms. Strangely I don;t grow any in my yard. My sister has several antique varieties and a native Rewood Rose from the PNW. |
I am Bad
Okay, I'm out of the closet.
I grow JFKs in memory of the man, they're big white toilet rolls of roses with a delicate perfume, but the (ding-dong) Avons (calling) - I trust you know the ad - are deep ruby reds that, with one single bloom, can scent an entire house. Olde worlde scent. There, I said it. |
Bloody woody weeds. A waste of good soil.
Mantis * ducks* |
Thanks Sherry.
Grub, we have 2 JFK's, not because of any deep fondness for the man, but because they are a really nice white rose. A friend gave us some fresh wild rose hips yesterday. I promptly made a cup of hose hip tea. It was delicious. I had planned to add a wild rose (Dog rose) or a Rugosa to our collection just for the hips. I'll definitely do that next spring. |
