tomato scent - always the same?
 

I would like to know, if there are tomato cultivars with different scented leaves than usual? This year I'm going to grow 2 currant tomatoes and a "Coyote" that is a wild one I guess.. and I wonder if they smell the same way as "normal" tomatoes. And maybe there are some wild types that smells in other way? I think of the green part of the plant smell, not fruit. I like that scent very much. Maybe I should be breeding for scented tomatoes.. producing more of that scent :)

SunGold and SunSugar are two commercial hybrids with a definitely different foliage scent. A little hard to describe, but it is distinctive. The varieties are from different breeding programs, but there must be some common parentage. The unusual scent persists in some progeny from advanced filial generations of crosses with either of these hybrids.

At the risk of eliciting the giggle factor, I've always felt that Sungold foliage of a certain recreational or medicinal herb popular in California. :)

:D Good to know! I have never seen/eaten both of them, I will add them to my wishlist. I had Sungella last year, I guess this is progeny of Sungold? But nothing special was with foliage scent.

There was another thread on the same subject. Foliage scent, I think, is another marker you can use when doing crosses.

Thank you.. very interesting informations in this thread, L. peruvianum like sungold=sweet, and hirsutum +glandalosum = soapy. So it's more like I should collect some wild species to work on the smell of foliage. And search for some strong-smelling cultivars, to work on oils production.. Hard to find informations :/
