There isn't anything to suggest that Copper River is NOT legit, is there? I assume it's simply a case of it being similar in appearance to several other tomatoes.

Yes, of course. I was implying to the debate earlier if this is just another renamed variety. Since it is very similar in appearance to Ananas Noir, someone could have just renamed it to boost up sale of a 'new' rare variety (it's happened before,no?). I just wanted to make sure, that's all...

But as it turns out, this is a variety that holds its own. A determinate, probably great for growing in a pot with wonderfully colored fruits :)

Thanks to Lurley, I'm growing Copper River this year and it was one of the super-early-for-me varieties that got started Feb. 1st. We had our 3rd one tonight and it was up against our third Fish Lake Oxheart and first Hays' of the year. It narrowly beat out Hays' for first place with FLO a distant third. It definitely is juicy and sweet and very beautiful with many unblemished fruits and just gorgeous sliced on the plate. It's definitely a determinate for sure and a different variety than Ananas Noire. Things can change as the season progresses, but this one's a winner for those with a sweet tooth.;)

Marianna's site states it is both in their descriptions, and Tatiana says ? I forget, but will someone who has grown it please answer? Lurley, I got this one from you at the CHOPTAG Plant swap. It is really growing wonderfully.

So this is an ancient thread, but I am wondering if anyone has more information about Copper River tomato now? I recieved it in my MMMM envelope and it looks beautiful! I have never grown a determinate plant before, and am wondering if perhaps it is a bad idea given my relatively short growing season (Ontario).

I plant out 8 week seedlings June 1st, and get big tomatoes ripening mid-August. By the end of September, frost is hitting.

Would Annanas Noir be a better tomato to grow in it's place?

I liked Copper River better than Ananas Noir and it produced the first ripe fruit for me on 7/14. I usually set out my plants just after mid-May and they're usually ~10 wks. old. Didn't keep records about ripening dates the year I grew AN, but I don't think you should have trouble getting fruit from either of them.

Lindy Adele - I grew Copper River a couple of years ago and I would have called it 'Midseason'. Got a lot of lovely fruits, and I would venture a guess that my season is a lot shorter than yours. Usually plant out around June 1.

I grew it in my greenhouse this year. pretty late for a determinate at about 85 days It is definitely a large determinate plant. BIG beautiful beefsteaks, the largest being about 20 oz for me. The fruit do look a lot like captain lucky but do not taste quite as good, milder and sweeter and the plant is regular leaf where Captain lucky is potato leaf.
I may have been the one who sent the seed in as a wishlist bonus , I can't remember. Give it a try, its a really good tomato.

I've been growing copper river for years, along with Ananas Noire. They are definitely not the same variety. I have never found CR to be that sweet, so maybe your soil conditions are different from mine here in central Ohio. I list it as a semi-determinate and have found it to be mid to late season- maybe 65 to 80 days. I find that some of the fruit can be quite large, but most are 12-16oz. Great taste, very few seeds.

Amazing how conditions influence taste. My CR's were the sweetest tomatoes of 2015, beating ARGG and Spear's TN Green, and running to the finish line with Green Drs Frosted Cherry. They, CR, also had a tart component to them akin to a very ripe kiwi. This fruitiness was increased with ripeness. Mine were determinate, and mid to late. BIG beefsteaks from a 5 gal growbag. This year I'm doing 5 plants, all destined for a CR marmalade.
