Lucky Bee

We have a new hybrid cherry tomato -- Lucky Bee

It is a long-shelf-life cherry tomato with the texture of a typical cherry tomato (it is not firm like Green Bee)

The flesh is largely green, but it develops orange-rust-brown color at the surface when ripe (similar to Lucky Tiger).

Flavor is exceptional. We had about 25 of our top cherry tomato hybrids available for evaluations this fall in our fields, and multiple chefs singled out this cherry tomato as their favorite.

Plants are vigorous and generally stand up to disease pretty well.

The main improvement of Lucky Bee, over Lucky Tiger, is that the fruits are resistant to cracking and the ripening window is much longer (Lucky Bee easily keeps a week at peak ripeness/flavor, at room temperature). While Lucky Tiger has fantastic flavor when eaten at peak ripeness, its short ripening window makes it very frustrating to consistently harvest and use tomatoes in an efficient manner.

Hello Fred,
that sounds great. As my major trouble is late blight, I have to ask if you've tested its tolerance of or even resistance to lb. If so, how was Lucky Bee faring?
And I really love the name: The bee that lands on this plant is a lucky one.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information yet to suggest as to it's relative resistance to late blight.

I think by the end of the year I will have a better idea.

Perfect. Thank you.

Best way for folks in Canada, Mexico and the EU to get our new varieties.

How big are Lucky Bee and Curry Grape compared to Green Bee or Madera?

Fred Hempel January 11, 2022 11:41 AM

Curry Grape is about the same size as Green Bee (large cherry). Lucky Bee is a little smaller, but larger than Madera.

I'll probably attend again. Kickstarter is the only way for me to get the seeds of new interesting varieties.

I have been looking for a sweet cherry tomato to add to my mixed cherry packages and I believe I have found it in Lucky Bee. So I quick ordered it and received it in only five days. Thanks, Fred for the great service on my very small order. You must be very busy now filling orders and it means a lot when a small order is filled very quickly. Also, thanks much for the free packet of seeds. I will be starting seeds very soon.

Lots of orders this fall were greatly delayed, as my seed arrived much later than expected. I am now trying to make up for that by being extra prompt.

6 hours remaining in kickstarter.

After that, seed available at website. But outside the US, Kickstarter is highly recommended.
