Juicy, not mealy at all tomato varieties
 

Usually I like tomatoes you can cook with, as I don't eat much raw tomatoes so I did grew a lot of not-so-juicy and more fleshy tomato varieties last year. Well, my boyfriend kind of hated every tomato I grew except for Sungold and Marizol gold.

I fear that whatever I'd pick myself wouldn't be to his liking.

So help me out - what are great varieties for salads and eating raw? Texture seems to be the most important point for him but obviously they should be flavorful as well.

I'd be happy if they'd be at least a bit colorful ;)

The mealy texture can be controlled to a point by never overwatering. If the tomatoes are grown outdoors (Not in a hot house) and it rains too much and too often - the tomatoes are going to be mealy. I haven't found a variety that this doesn't happen to.

Cherry tomato varieties that my family really likes a lot:

Difficult question to answer but I'll start it off with a few suggestions.

If he liked Marizol Gold,why not look at

Marizol Bratka
Marizol Gold
Marizol Gold Cherry
Marizol Korney
Marizol Magic
Marizol Maroon
Marizol Pink
Marizol Purple
Marizol Purple Potato Leaf
Marizol Red

Some of the above are due to X pollinations,but Marizol Bratka is the first one I got from Joe Bratka whose parents came from Germany, Black Forest aka Shwarzwald ( spelling?). And Joe bred many of the other colored ones as well.

The original name of all the Marizols were called Maria's Zell (village),and that got shortened to Marizol.

Texture,which you say is very important, is very difficult to answer since that depends mainly on the weather in any one season and other factors as well.

So I'll wait to see what others might say before I post more.

Good to remember that if your boyfriend doesn't like many that you grow, well,why not consider finding a new boyfriend.:lol:;)

Mat-Su Express was very juicy for me, I think Blood Butcher is in its parentage. It is great in salad. For salsa, I drain off a lot of the juice.

Wild Tiger is a 3-bite tomato that is beautiful- deep green with red & orange streaks- and has a lot of great taste.

For something different try Lime Green Salad. You’ll get lots of golf ball sized fruit on a manageable plant. It’s been a hit at our informal tomato tastings.

The tomato with perfect texture, for me, is Seek-No-Further Love Apple.

I detest mealy fruit, and ''Never mealy' is a trait I looked for after growing early and other tomato varieties in cold spring weather.

But tomato texture can vary a lot beyond that description. Smooth and to the point of silky texture is found in great beefsteaks usually (but they still might be sub par in the earliest fruit set)
Cherry texture can vary too, from the classic satisfying firm skin and bursting on the bite, meatier or less meaty, and skin can be thin or thick to the point that some dislike it.



I suggest you try some classic beefs with great flavor and texture, and depending how north you are or how early you start, discount the early fruit and see if you can produce something he likes. Results may vary on the year and weather, but there are many great tasting and early-mid types that might fill the bill. If you are far north or want something earlier in the season go for the best recommended cherries: Black Cherry, Galinas Yellow, Karma Pink for example.


Unlike Carolyn, I would not ditch the boyfriend. Explore and enjoy his tastes - ditch him, sure, but for better reasons. ;)

Oh, that boyfriend gives her an excuse -pardon me, reason- to try a whole slew of new-to-them tomatoes!
