Climbing Plants (Flowers)

The next sort of big job on my list of gardening things to do is build my wife a fence to plant invasive climbing plants on. I say invasive because we grew morning glories on a fence around our garden and now, I pull morning glory plants up all over the garden - they're weeds.

She wants to grow Morning Glories, Moonflowers, and Trumpet Vines on this new fence. I am wondering if you all might know of some other flowers that grow like those three?

The fence is 60 feet long and 6 foot tall.

Butterfly vine is a real must to grow.
Were the link says moderate water hog wash I ignore mine most of the time.

The butterfly vine looks very good.

There is a lot of clay in the soil there. I plan on mixing in some sandy loam.

You'll get lots of hummingbirds! What about climbing roses?

Runner beans grow on long vines, and have very pretty flowers. The beans are just a bonus. Some are edible others I think are better just ornamental.

Hyacinth bean is another, although edible, I don't eat them.

Deborah, we planted a climbing rose yesterday. It is called CL. Blaze. http://www.parransgreenhouse.com/cl-blaze-climbing-rose-p/clblaze.htm

We planted it on the front side of an oak tree. On the back side is a yellow climbing rose we planted last year https://www.directgardening.com/2402-roses/4879-climbing-golden-showers-rose#/quantity-1

We want them to grow up into the tree.

Sue, I'm going to look for some runner beans Wednesday to plant in the main garden. I didn't know about the flowers. Cool

Deborah March 7, 2016 03:21 PM

Ooooooooh! That will be beautiful growing up into the tree!

Passionflower is also super beautiful and grows quickly. It does well in our climate, but you'll see it popping up everywhere once it fruits because birds and critters eat the fruit and "deposit" seeds all over your yard. There's a ton of different varieties, all their flowers are so unique and nice to look at:

Kelly, those flowers are beautiful.

Worth, I bought these to plant on the edge of the elm thicket in our back yard.

You are getting some great suggestions another is Spanish Flag or Mina lobata. A great plant for a screen that is VERY attractive to hummingbirds.
