Leave potatoes plant bed with new crop

Am gardening at community plot raise bed so space is a premium.
Is it a viable idea to plant zucchini on to top now and lift potatoes and zukes later in Oct?
I want to reuse space with new crop of zucchini but am questioning if keeping potatoes in the bed will give me advantage over basement storing?

In the past I've left some potatoes to dig later, some time after the plants were finished. It didn't work out well for me, as wireworms or other pests enjoyed the delayed harvest at my expense.

I was also going to mention that leaving potatoes in the ground would be an invitation for insects or even mice and voles to eat them. I would dig them and get them safely into storage after letting the skins cure for a week or two to harden them.
