UUGGGHHH!!!! Butternut Rugosa? NOT SO MUCH
Started Blue Hubbard, Triamble, Delicata, Buttercup, and Red Kuri, and was most looking forward to Butternut Rugosa. Put in 5 Rugosa plants, last to germinate, slowest to grow, but finally got going and are now covered in squash...REGULAR BUTTERNUT SQUASH. I hate it when these type of mix ups happen. Oh well...
Only one I've tried so far of the above varieties is a delicata, but it really had no flavour...guess it needed to be a little older or age for a little longer. |
I suggest this vender for B. Rugosa

Thanks Fred. The store I bought from is going to re-send me a packet from a different lot of seeds, but I think I'll hedge my bets and order from your vendor also. I guess I'll just have to be happy with boring old small butternut for this year.

We have picked about 6000 lbs of Rugosa this past month. and there is 2 or 3 times that still on the field.
One restaurant has already taken delivery of 2K lbs... All from Seeds From Italy. No little, shiny butternut in the lot. |
Wow! Would be great to see some pics. The first butternut on my vines is rather large (maybe 9 pounds) so I was waiting for the ridges and rough surface to develop, but eventually realized it was not meant to be.
|
Wow. That is large for any butternut other than B. rugosa.
|
It was just teasing me, getting my hopes up. There are one or two other large ones, but the rest are actually smaller than I would expect, but still plenty of time for them to have a growth spurt.
|
Are you sure you don't have Butternut Rugosa? The bumps don't develop until the very end, and many times they are less pronounced than in the packet photos.
|
Unfortunately yes, they are definitely regular butternut waltham.
|
Oh well. You could have alot worse...
At least it wasn't a zucchini |
Ha...now that would have been an unpleasant surprise. Or even worse, could have been spaghetti squash!

I have a pic for you.
Edit: I finally took the photo. i had to cradle it to bring it in and before it lost some of its water weight it was hefty like a sack of potatoes |
Lovely!!! And definitely NOT what I have unfortunately.

Butternut Rugosa is my FAVE squash! Last year I didn't plant them and regretted it. This year I got a late start, but have 3 squashes growing, one is about ripe the other two are smaller for now. I know mine won't be crossed because I grew NO other squashes at all. If you can wait, I'll send you some of my seeds from my squash Anthony.

Okay. Now I'm going to have to buy more seeds!
