New green tomato hybrid?
 

I'm pretty sure I saw this -- somewhere... There is a new tomato that has been developed that is supposedly non-bitter, non-sour when green (not ripe). This seemed like it might be a good thing to try using an air fryer or with conventional frying. Didn't find this with Google. Has anyone run across this variety?

I've known many a green tomato that is not bitter or sour. Dotson's Lebanese Heart comes to mind as one that has a good taste when green.

Not new at all and you can see from the above that many places were offering it.

Don't include Cherokee Green since that's an OP variety.

I think there is still another one that was bred by one of the large tomato commercial breeding companies based on the West Coast. I think that's the one I grew maybe several decades ago.

Thanks. Fried Green Hybrid is the one I believe I saw. My grandmother used to fix these (years ago) at the end of the season. But to me, they were just terrible tasting. This one might be worth trying.

Anyone could slap the name Fried Green Hybrid on just about any tomato to sell seeds! If you look closely at the picture I'd bet the "color" has been photo shopped too.

That's certainly a cynical view. I have grown the Fried Green Hybrid, and it is a green beefsteak that never turns color (actually, the surface flushes slightly yellow when "ripe"). However it is not astringent/chalky when the surface flushes slightly yellow. The fruits (for me) were crunchy, tangy and pleasant. They can be eaten raw. But they also make great fried green tomatoes.

In other words, it is exactly as they advertise.

When you say green (not ripe) I am assuming you mean "green but not soft"

Both Fried Green Tomato and Green Bee fit this description. They don't get soft, but they do develop ripe flavors.

Thanks for the info and link. Good to know someone here has tried it. I have it in mind that fried it would taste somewhat like eggplant. (And I really like fried eggplant.)

While this variety is advertised as a tomato for use in making fried green tomatoes, I think they are actually underselling it. And not highlighting what is truly unique about the variety. It can be eaten fresh! It makes great salsa, and is also a very unique tomato with "ripe" flavors combined with crunchy texture.

My brother tells me that Celebrity makes excellent fried green tomatoes. I haven't tried it myself.

Fried Green Tomato is a great green tomato. it doesn't get soft... ever. it actually turns yellow eventually but not soft. I grow this every year. I have a roadside stand and people ask for this specifically. not just green tomatoes... "fried green tomato" variety please.... I still have some hanging in the high tunnel today.
