Potato Digging Day

Since the potato plants were dying back, Pickles dug up the first two hills of Yukon Gold yesterday to see what was what and she unearthed 5 lbs of nice taties! So we went out this morning around 8am while the temp was just 74 and dug the rest of the row.

The 18' row yielded a total of 14 lbs of Yukon Golds and 22 lbs of Red Pontiacs, including the ones that Pickles dug up yesterday. They are all now in trays in a cool closet. They stored pretty good there last year.

Last year we grew two 11' rows, one of Yukons and one Pontiac, and got 55 lbs total (average 2.5 lbs/row foot). Too much for two people so this year we grew one 18' row (half Yukon, half Pontiac) and got 36 lbs total (2.0 lbs/row foot). Considering that row got frostbitten several times and then sat in standing water a while, I'm amazed at what we actually got!

Nice potatoes.
Now who is Pickles?:?!?:
I know you must have said before but I forgot.

Nice harvest!!!

Thanks, folks! The real small ones will be boiled for lunch tomorrow. Oh boy! Baby taties and lots of butter!

Worth, Pickles is my sister. We live together and each have our own specialties. I do most of the garden planning and installation but Pickles grows the potatoes and the tomatoes that are up at the house. I do the pruning and spraying if necessary. She does a lot of pickling and veggie canning and I can up stocks and soups, bake the bread and do grilling/barbecue. Tag team cooking!

There’s nothing like the taste of a freshly harvested potato.
Those look so good!

Here I am wondering if it's too early to plant the potatoes. :twisted:Nice crop there.

Ah, but you don't have 100 degrees going on. :?: Wanna trade weather for a few days? Thanks for the kind words. For lunch we boiled up the little ones that were smaller than an egg and some like large marbles. GOOD STUFF!
