We never see fresh tumeric in the supermarket here, ever.
My friend brought me a little piece from Hawaii two years ago. The first year it sprouted in July - way late! And then it hung on in the greenhouse in the cold not wanting to die down. Repotted and split the roots with my friend and another. And this year my little piece actually sprouted in the spring and finally finally started to flower in September. Gorgeous flowers!
They don't seem to have a good sense of what the seasons are, as other plants do. Guess that goes with the tropical territory. One of my friends got nothing of it, and the other had a small sprout that came up in the summer and got no bigger. :twisted:
Anyway the friend who gave it to me in the first place is back on the island and I gave her the plant this fall .

My elephant ears bloomed one year, yes they bloom.

Worth, where did you find the nice turmeric rhizomes? The ones I got look pretty sad compared to yours.

At the local grocery store called HEB we were talking about it in this thread and I decided I would go get some ginger to plant.
I have never seen turmeric there before but there it was.:lol:
We have what they call a HEB plus here now.
It is a pretty nice place to shop.
I sure as the devil not complaining considering the stores I grew up around.

On top of that they are a good employer and the same people stay and are very friendly and happy.
I am always cutting up with them.:lol:

Those look so much better than the ones you bought at the Asian market. I hope you will have great success growing those.

I have them already in trays on the heating mat. After I took this photo I covered them lightly with more potting mix.

I saw where you were supposed to plant the sprouting knobs pointing up.
This is after I planted all of mine sideways like I saw someone else do.

The eyes look to be on the sides of some of them. I believe that like flower bulbs, if they get planted upside down the sprouts will find "up" and turn toward the surface- it may take awhile longer, but they will be all right. There were some little nubs of sprouts already in view. I am very happy with the vendor. He shipped them Priority mail.

I will be surprised if any of mine even come up.:lol:

Worth, are they in the ground? From what I've read, they need a warm bed to sprout- that's why I'm using heat mats. Then later I will put them in containers. I bought some black plastic buckets at $ tree that are about 12" across. I think I will try to grow all mine in pots with a few test ones in ground. I think zone 6a is too cold for them.
