Best New Tomato From Last Year and Your Must Grows Every Year
Hi All,
I wondered if you had some new discoveries last year in regard to tomatoes that you will actually be growing again. Also, what are your 5 favorite must grows? I didn't discover a new one I want to grow again but here are some of my must grows every year. Sweet Treats - pink cherry type. So sweet and delicious. Chika - red cherry type. Plant stay small maybe 5 feet max. Really flavorful and sweet Sunchocola - Purple cherry type. Richness of a black tomato in little package. Orange Paruche - Looks exactly like Sungold with an added savoriness. Aunt Ruby's German Green - Large Beefsteak. Rich, sweet with some tang. It's got it all. Rosella Purple - dwarf purple Beefsteak. Richness and sweet like all the blacks but in a smaller plant. There you have it. My must grows. Good luck to all in 2020. Karma |
New one's for me that will make another rotation are Amish Rose and Cherokee Green
In every rotation is: Sungold F1 Cherokee Purple Neves Azorean Red Marianna's Peace |
Every year is Sungold and Post Office Spoonful. Still searching for "must-grow" big ones.
Last year's really good one, great taste & production, would grow again: Butter Apple (seds from J&L) Last year's good one, great taste, gorgeous, but light on production: Dark Galaxy. |
Husky cherry red.
Good heat resistance and was one of the last plants standing. Semi determinate so you get flushes of pick-able tomatoes. Also easy to clone. |
Every year is...
SunGold Aunt Ginny's Purple Stump Of The World Seek-No-Further Love Apple** Swoon** Bacon Lettuce and This** perhaps a new, unnamed, unstable, cherry co-discovery** Hundreds more every 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th year. **I'm slightly partial to my own discoveries, and like to trial them against many other tomatoes. Best "new" one for me is Olive Hill. But, I stay generally a year or two behind others in trialing varieties, waiting to see consistently great reviews over a few years. |
Absolute must grows for me are: Rebel Yell, Momotaro OP, ISPL, Sungold. NAR usually has a rotation. Tried Dotson Lebanese Heart last summer and it might make it’s way back. I am still deciding if Black Cherry will be back- and other than that, still deciding.

Finally got Ambrosia Orange to grow true. It's spectacular. If you like super-sweet cherries, It's a must grow.

three from my anna russian cross project.
a smallish orange plum tomato i will call lempi line. a saladette size oxheart type i will call aili line. a fat pink plum shaped i will call mama helen line. also plan to grow out red field cherry cross again to make sure flavor is consistent from plant to plant. unsure what stage this one is at. keith |
Thank you. I will try it!
|
Thank you Sharon. I think this is the year I will try Rebel Yell. Lots of people seem to love it.

Last year I finally discovered what all the fuss was about Sungold. I get it now, and I'll gladly plunk down my pennies every four-five years for new pack of seeds.
Also started exploring more of the dwarfs and last year tried Sleeping Lady and Golden Gypsy -- both will be back! |
Last year’s best tasting.. if only I could remember..!
Probably one of the cherries - Dr Carolyn. Only approproate, as a memorial to Carolyn who passed away last summer. I will grow it again this season. Another must each year.. something black. Crimean or Tula, never mind! Also.. a pink cocktail from Russia Something green Yellow plum shaped |

How does Ambrosia Orange compare to Ambrosia Gold? Where did you get your seeds? When you say that you "finally got it to grow true" does that mean that the seed line is unstable? Thanks! |

The darker it gets, the sweeter it gets, until it then gets overripe and losses almost everything. A SunGold is a terrible thing to waste.:?: |

Best new discovery from last year: Taiga, a marbled green heart from True North Karen.

Girl Girl's Weird Thing was new to me last year and it was fantastic in all aspects--flavor, size, production. I am growing it again in 2020. I did not grow KBX last year and greatly missed it so it will be back in 2020 after 1 year absence.

Best "discovery" from our own lines was Agi Red. Last year, 4 plants in a trial section. In 2020 we will be growing at least four 100 ft rows (200+ plants) and it will be our farm's featured variety.

Perennial must grows include Captain Lucky, Amana Orange, Cherokee Purple and Tomimaru Muchoo

My every year varieties are
-Lillian's Yellow (my absolute favorite!) -Sungold -Brandywine(Sudduth) -Mortgage Lifter Best new variety (new to me) last year that I am growing again this year (and maybe make the every year list): -Kosovo -Marnero (F1) -fantastic Black hybrid, tastes as good as Black Krim and Cherokee purple but I had much higher yield. I fully expect Marnero to make the every year list after this next season. If you haven't tried Lillian's Yellow, I highly recommend it. I think I'm going to start another thread on this variety as I am curious why I rarely see it mentioned on this forum. |
As. Market gardener known to have lots of varieties, my every year list is long, but here goes:
Sungold Most of the Artisan series, Tigers and Bumblebees Cherry Bomb Ambrosia Gold Orange Paruche Cherry Black Cherry Russian Mini Yellow Matt's Wild Cherry Bloody Butcher Stupice Matina Juliet Opalka Amish Paste Kosovo Prue Brokenbar's Costoluto Genovese Wes Pink Honey Sheryl's Portuguese Heart Brandywine Sudduth's Strain Dester KBX BKX Aunt Ruby's German Green Eva Purple Ball Druzba Red Brandywine Jet Star Well, that's a start, anyway. |

A SunGold is a terrible thing to waste.:?:
I commit the ultimate sin...I cook with them! I found a recipe for "Pasta with 15 Minute Burst Cherry Tomato Sauce" from Epicurious. It is amazing made with a red non-sweet cherry such as Chadwick's. When made with Sungold it is absolutely sublime. |
The best new varieties in my garden were all dwarfs:
Teensy Yellow Uluru Ochre Wherokowhai |
Must grows for me:
Blush Bulgarian Triumph Indian Stripe Little Lucky Maglia Rosa Orange Strawberry (new-to-me last year) Red Lithium Sungold Taste |

I'd like to see Lillian's Yellow Heirloom get wider distribution. The reason it doesn't may be that it generally can have extremely few seeds in each tomato. |
This past season, I found two varieties that will certainly find a place in my future 'rotation':
Rosella Crimson and Rosella Purple I currently don't have a 'must grow' list as I can only have four tomato plants per year... and I have about a seven or eight year backlog of seeds that I still haven't tried yet. |
Must Grows for me include:
Cuostralee Sungold Summertime Gold Sean's Yellow Dwarf Don's Double Delight Big Beef New "regulars" from last year: Mountain Gem F1 : A Dr. Randy Gardner variety that matches Big Beef in quality, disease tolerance, taste, and productivity. Must grow Gimli's Red Beard : A new red dwarf selection from my cross of Cuostralee x Summertime Gold Excellent taste, size, and productivity Summertime Scarlet : Another new red dwarf selection, PL version of Gimli's Red Beard Lee |
Best new to me variety from last year: Canadian Heart
Must Grows: there are about 50 varieties that begin the year as "must grows" and get cut down to 15 between now and March. We shall see what this list looks like later. |
Best new-to-me variety in 2019 was Cosmic Eclipse, hands down. It's prolific and has excellent flavor and an eye-catching appearance.
Must-grows: Marglobe and a few of its relatives (Rutgers, Glovel, Marvelosa, etc.), Green Mustang, Jaune Flamme, Maglia Rosa, SunGold, Snow White or Super Snow White, a pink Brandywine Sudduth's cross I'm trying to develop into an early-season small pink beefsteak, and a Dwarf Project chocolate cherry still in development. Based on other Tomatovillians' recommendations, 2020 will welcome Azoychka, Nepal, Galina, and Porter. |
