Orange Slice
A local friend gave me some Orange Slice Hybrid seeds last year to grow. I planted a few, they grew nice, tasted good and are a good looking tomato. I planted 6 F1 and 6 F2's, all germinated. I was surprised to see 2 of the F2's are potato leafed, it's going to be interesting seeing what the F2's look and taste like.

I've grown these for three straight yrs. In my clay soil they make lots of 10-16oz solid fruit. Very meaty with medium taste.

PCMG, do you intend to de-hybridize them?
PCMG, do you intend to de-hybridize them?
Nan
I have F2 and F3 seeds I sent to a few people recently, but I haven't started any this year... too many other varieties I'm growing. I'd be happy to send you some seeds though. |
Thanks but no, I'm developing a tomato of my own & am up to my ears in F2's.

pmcgrady, I have 2 of each growing and one F-2 is a potato leaf.

Reports back from this year so far are mostly RL with a few PL plants showing up. It's just a guess but I think one of the F1 parents is KBX. If I was to dehybridize them I don't know what route I would go, RL,PL or grow for size and/or taste. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Orange Slice
From Burpee seed they are nearly as prolific as Big Beef in my garden but a bit larger on avg. I am growing both again this yr.

Here's what I got so far..
First pic is my potato leaf one. As you can see from first fruit, very round. Not like a KBX. Decent looking plant so far. Had frost damage but I let her be. Second is my regular leaf one. Much flatter looking shape. Healthy so far. Should be interesting! Greg |
Sorry they are sideways. My phone is not a morning person I guess. :/

I grew the OS F2 last year from some seeds sent to me by a kind member here. The one I grew was PL also. Very large, tasty tomatoes, but it was a really big plant for an EarthBox. Orange Wellington F1 tastes very similar to me, but the plants are smaller -- not nearly as wide. I keep thinking I should grow an OW F2 to see how it turns out, but I seem to always to just end up planting the F1. Menards and Lowe's have both carried the seeds for several years, and not expensive at all.

pmcgrady, here's one from the f-3 seeds, it's a RL plant. It's not doing great with this early heat but then none of my plants are.
|
The original OS f1's were round, but I believe they were RL. It's interesting seeing what's showing up. If I was trying to dehybridize (which I'm not) I'm not sure what route I would go... Round or flattened or PL or RL or taste! Still pretty cool seeing the variations!

Orange Slice Hybrid is RL.

Ok, so the reg leaf is producing flat, orange ones. Haven't tasted yet. I will this week.
The Potato one is interesting. Medium sized 'blocky' orange tomatoes. Going to let the one ripen for a couple days on the counter. Will let you know. :) Greg |
gssgarden - The oblate ones in the first picture are visually striking to me.

Ok..here's my update.
The regular leaf plant is just not producing. Had the one, but it had a split I didn't see and she rotted. MAYBE another fruit or two before years end. The Potato leaf one has produced a few fruit of a few ounces. Beautiful color. I let the first one get REALLY ripe. To ripe as it started to grow something inside. Didn't taste it. The second was fine. The taste was outstanding!! Full bodied! A real winner in my book. EXTREMELY meaty as the pics show. I only got a few seeds from her but will get more next tomato. Really looking to see what next year brings! This is one great tasting tomato!! Greg |
Wow! And they look picture perfect! They look better than the original F1 Orange Slice.
|
Grady, the 2 that I had so far really were picture perfect. Lol
I really hope they grow the same next year. I'm shooting for the same exact tomato. This one had a lot of frost damage so it got off to a very bad start. The next one I'll cut in half for pics, squeeze the seeds, and DEFINETLY eat the rest! Lol Will keep you updated. Greg |
Some of mine are a bit mealy due to the monsoon but still a very solid fruit and wonderful to look at. I have 9 plants and they rival Big Beef for productivity and are larger also. I buy seed from Burpee.

Planted my F4 Orange slice seeds yesterday. HOPE to get those blocky fruits from last year. I will only grow the potato leaf ones.
It was an exceptional tomato. I’ll know in a week! Fingers crossed!! Greg |

Looks a lot like Moonglow! |
Nyrfan, from what I read Moonglow is regular leaf. Mine was definitely potato leaf. One site had as it at 6-8 oz as well. Mine were not close to that.
Most pics from google look very different as well. Some are oblate, round, much more gel etc. Who know what I’ll get but I will grow potato leaf only. Prob 4 plants or so. Greg |
Interesting what you will come up with. I'm leaning towards Japanese tomatoes again this year.
Mandarin is an OP that looks similar to the round tomato. PM if you want some seed to compare, these are RL...if you end up with some PL seeds from this year, I'd be interested in growing a few out. |
I planted about 20 seeds or so. My best looking ones. Another 10 from the same plant, different fruit that I’m not sure about because I let them dry out in their cup. Lol
I’ll let you know and I can ship you some seedlings if they turn out to be PL. Greg |
Don't need seedlings, just seeds
|
Day 4 after planting and a couple are starting to break ground! In a few days I should have my germination rate.
How was yours Grady? Greg |

They're looking promising!! Looking like PL! :)
|
Looks like they're all PL!! That's great news! Pot up will be this weekend. Prob pot up 8 of them, plant 6 and have a friend or neighbor grow 2 more. I HOPE they are the same tomato!
