Climbing Plants (Flowers)
The next sort of big job on my list of gardening things to do is build my wife a fence to plant invasive climbing plants on. I say invasive because we grew morning glories on a fence around our garden and now, I pull morning glory plants up all over the garden - they're weeds.
She wants to grow Morning Glories, Moonflowers, and Trumpet Vines on this new fence. I am wondering if you all might know of some other flowers that grow like those three? The fence is 60 feet long and 6 foot tall. |
Butterfly vine is a real must to grow.
Were the link says moderate water hog wash I ignore mine most of the time. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiHjYnKp6_LAhWBdD4KHTVVD_gQFggvMAU&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbexar-tx.tamu.edu%2Fhomehort%2Farchives-of-weekly-articles-davids-plant-of-the-week%2Fyellow-butterfly-vine-mascagnia-macroptera%2F&usg=AFQjCNHNtMt8novEWi6ANuKtETnaxGwMNg |
The butterfly vine looks very good.
There is a lot of clay in the soil there. I plan on mixing in some sandy loam. |
You'll get lots of hummingbirds! What about climbing roses?
|
Runner beans grow on long vines, and have very pretty flowers. The beans are just a bonus. Some are edible others I think are better just ornamental.
Hyacinth bean is another, although edible, I don't eat them. |
Deborah, we planted a climbing rose yesterday. It is called CL. Blaze. http://www.parransgreenhouse.com/cl-blaze-climbing-rose-p/clblaze.htm
We planted it on the front side of an oak tree. On the back side is a yellow climbing rose we planted last year https://www.directgardening.com/2402-roses/4879-climbing-golden-showers-rose#/quantity-1 We want them to grow up into the tree. |
Sue, I'm going to look for some runner beans Wednesday to plant in the main garden. I didn't know about the flowers. Cool
|
Ooooooooh! That will be beautiful growing up into the tree!
|
Passionflower is also super beautiful and grows quickly. It does well in our climate, but you'll see it popping up everywhere once it fruits because birds and critters eat the fruit and "deposit" seeds all over your yard. There's a ton of different varieties, all their flowers are so unique and nice to look at:

not sure how clematis does in your area but there are many beautiful varieties.

Kelly, those flowers are beautiful.
Worth, I bought these to plant on the edge of the elm thicket in our back yard. |
You are getting some great suggestions another is Spanish Flag or Mina lobata. A great plant for a screen that is VERY attractive to hummingbirds.
http://www.anniesannuals.com/plants/view/?id=685 If you would like some seed, I have them. |
Salt needs runner bean seeds.:)
I looked high and low and didn't find any at a store but a good person here sent me some. Worth |
Salt, I have a some that I can share, Tormato sent me some in the swap, and I can definitely spare a few different kinds. Pm me.

We have a lot of hummingbirds here. They playfully buzz by your head out in the gardens. It's kind eerie in a way, but it makes you feel good inside at the same time. I'll be buying stamps Wednesday, and yes, I would like a few seeds if you can spare them. |
Karen, I need to do some homework on clematis. I did look at an image link https://www.google.com/search?q=clematis&biw=1152&bih=553&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiv87GdkbDLAhUG6x4KHSsvA6UQ_AUIBygB
One word: WOW! |
Sue, the same day I'm going to buy stamps (Wednesday) - I'll be looking for runner beans. I'll PM you if I don't find any - or maybe I'll find some you might be interested in?
|
Robert, I also like Cypress Vine, found seeds at Home Depot or Lowe's
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipomoea_quamoclit Jackmanii Clematis is a fav. I bought a bare root at Wal-Mart around 2003, moved it once and still looks good. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clematis_'Jackmanii' My favorite climbing rose is 'New Dawn'. Bought a plant at Wal-Mart around 2006 and it is tough, to say the least. Disease resistant and smells great! http://homeguides.sfgate.com/new-dawn-rose-care-26140.html Check out Lady Banks Rose, it is almost thornless and beautiful. My aunt had one on a chain link fence and when it bloomed...wow! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_banksiae |
I'm seconding the Lady Banks Rose suggestion as well! My Gram has some at her house in Oak Hill growing up a live oak and hanging from the branches and it is so pretty. Pom pom yellow flowers everywhere. :)
|
I need to get out and see the world more. Those are beautiful flowers.
|
This thread reminds me of the Addams Family where Morticia was always talking about her poison ivy and how well it was doing.
Worth |
Worth, Morticia would be upset with us here. I have a zip lock bag of poison ivy/oak/sumac soothing creams and lotions. We all know the saying, " If it has five leaves - it's okay - 3 leaves - leave it alone!"

I did not find any runner beans today. I found and bought a pack of Asparagus Yard Long Beans. I've never seen them - much less grown any.
I found Clematis at Walmart. I didn't get to buy any stamps today - I had to go home due to health reasons. Will try again tomorrow. |

If you eat the fried green beans at an Asian restaurant these may very well be what you have eaten. Worth |
I did some homework on Asparagus beans. This site gets straight to the point http://www.rareseeds.com/red-seeded-asparagus-bean/ "They grow well under almost any conditions–very resistant to heat, humidity and insects; great for the South."
I know "Flowers" but this Asparagus bean has me interested too :) For some reason, I had to edit this post instead of starting a new reply - oh well, this works ... I looked up clematis https://www.google.com/search?q=clematis+flower&biw=1152&bih=553&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjZr4mhvLfLAhVIXh4KHQq-B7UQ_AUIBigB too. Beautiful |
Ten feet in Mo twenty feet in Tx.

I could see it now, 20' tall bean plants with us out there on the SkyTrak lift picking away https://www.google.com/search?q=skytrak+lift&sa=X&biw=1152&bih=553&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&ved=0ahUKEwjn78mwybfLAhWGQiYKHQEdCy4QsAQITw&dpr=1.25

I'm not kidding, my runner beans have passed the 4 foot mark already. The only thing that will stop the yard longs is if you get tired of watering them. |
Salt, I have a little package going out to you tomorrow.
