Anyone Want to Grow This Cross?

I grew these F1s last summer. I crossed Cherokee Purple and Pineapple varieties. I used pollen from CH Purple with Pineapple female and then I also crossed using Pineapple pollen with CH Purple female. The photo above and two below are the CH Purple pollen donor. They ripened well over a week before the Pineapple pollen donor did. Other than that, They were perfectly similar in taste (fruity), appearance, size(very large), color and productivity (high). I can spare 10 seeds per person for a limited number of people. All I ask is that you do attempt to plant and cultivate 2 plants and that you post results. If you get anything real nice or different, it would be nice to get some seeds back. In fact you can see that I couldn't wait and picked these while not exactly ripe. Do you have an estimated DTM for these crosses?
How does one know when it's completely ripe? |
Do you have an estimated DTM for these crosses?
How does one know when it's completely ripe?
one was Last year everything I had took a very long time to ripen. These were 75-85 days. I wouldn't use last year as a gauge though. When they're ripe they are a uniform dark pink color. Much like the one pictured upside down in the second to last picture. |
F1 or F2?
Oh and BTW that is an F1 hybrid I would grow. Beautiful tomatoes. But the F2's are likely not to be uniform at all. |
Since I do a lot of crossing with both parents....I have an interest in a few F-2 seed. With all the crosses I made over the years with Pineapple and Cherokee Purple...I never made that very cross. I think I have over 50 crosses with those parents.
I will post my favorite Pineapple F-1 cross in May . About that same time I will have lots of F-1 of Pineapple x Undisclosed variety...hoping to get enough seed to number in the thousands. |

That's why I'd like to get more planted than I can handle.
Since I do a lot of crossing with both parents....I have an interest in a few F-2 seed. Tom, and anyone who wants some please PM address. |

Yeah! I hope so. Good luck with them. |
Edit... I had posted right here that I'd run out of seeds but last year I sent Travis some F1 seeds and has kindly offered to send me more F2s. So please PM me not Travis if you want seeds.
dinca Tom dustdevil crmauch Ken4230 Doug9345 dfollet chiefbeaz I'll probably send them out this weekend. Good luck and happy gardening. |
I grew two F1 plants from Marc's Cherokee Purple x Pineapple cross, and the tomatoes were very good. The plants were healthy and produced well and plenty. I did not have the concentric cracking problems shown in some of the photos. Most of the ones I grew were near perfect.
|
Thanks for the input Travis.
Did you save any seeds for yourself? I only had that cracking on a few. The photos are from some of the first ripe fruit. Later produce was near perfect as well. We had a crazy spell of weather last season. Ultimately, I had a very good season overall. |
Yes, Marc, I saved a sufficient supply of F2 seeds, and if you need any for sharing with others, just say so. I could send you several hundred if you need them.
I think this cross has a lot of potential for all sorts of recombinations: Purple, black, purple or black bicolors (like Ananas Noir) with GWR bicolors streaked with blood red flesh, etc.; yellows, green when ripes, and even whites streaked with red, etc. And I think there is a tremendous chance of lots of different color recombinations with great flavor. |

So fellow gardeners, if you want seeds send me a PM. I'll send them out as soon as I receive more from Travis.. |
In case I missed messaging any of the folks listed in post#9,
the seeds were mailed today. I should have more soon if anybody else is interested |

Sorry you got shorted. I guess I can't count. I'll send a few more. Anybody else get shorted? |
I've got to wait until April 5-8 to get these things started. Who lives in a zone that will be sowing soon?
|
i'd be happy to grow them this season, i have a few tomato starts going in the closet under a metal halide lamp i'd be glad to add a couple more.
|
I received the additional seeds, but I doubt they'll be needed because;
all four CHP female F2 2013 and all five Pineapple female F2 2013 seeds germinated within 10 days of sowing. |

If there's still some left I would be interested in growing a few of these out.
